An incomplete Elizabethan two part lead cloth seal dating to c.1558-1600. Only one of the discs survive. The outer face of the surviving half is decorated with a crowned portcullis surrounded by a circumferential inscription suggesting an Elizabethan date (Egan 1992, 2) the inscription is largely illegible. The reverse has a central integral rivet.
The portcullis was "the main design for alnage seals in the late Tudor period... and continued in use into the early seventeenth century" (Egan 1995: 9). Alnage seals indicated the cloth had been checked for quality by a Crown official a…

A damaged disc from a post-medieval cloth seal.
The sub-circular design has a relief-stamped rose head at the centre of its upper surface. In addition, close to the edge, there is a possible letter or numeral. A squashed rivet projects from the reverse, located a short distance from centre.
Diameter: 19.6mm; thickness: 3.4mm. Weight: 2.75g.
The presence of the rose suggests this is probably part of an alnage seal, which would have marked the payment of the duty on the cloth. A range of similar seals, dating from the reigns of Charles II to George I, were found in London (Egan…

The bent object would originally have been circular in plan. Around the top is the legend '[DE/LON]DI/NO'. The reverse of the disc is plain and there is no sign of a connecting strip or other means of attachment; however, there is a single piercing, located a short distance from centre, at 4 o'clock.

Part of a post-Medieval lead-alloy cloth seal.
Two sub-oval discs survive, joined by a folded connecting strip. A projection at the opposite end suggests further discs may originally have been attached. The relief-stamped image on one disc takes the form of a crowned rose, with an indecipherable legend extending around the circumference. Faint traces of a design can also be seen on the surface of the second disc.
