One disc has the remains of the central rivet that would have held the two pieces together, upon which are traces of decoration, perhaps a portcullis or similar. The second disc is incomplete with nearly half of the disc missing due to old breaks. Lead cloth seals such as this were in use between the 14th and 18th centuries AD, although it remains uncertain precisely when in this period the current example belongs. See Egan, 1995: pp. 1-4

A complete two disc lead cloth seal probably late medieval or post medieval in date. This cloth seal would have marked a cloth for commercial sale, it is large, measuring 40.54mm in diameter and weighing 42.09g in weight. A square lead item, probably a cloth seal. It is 20mm square and 2mm thick with some slight variation from distortion. One side is decorated with a figurative design - possibly a right facing head, breast and wings of an eagle or other bird. Details are obscured by wear and lines possibly the result of a past bend. The other side is inscribed 'dot OATE/DABI/TYR' the style of the letters is unusual - possibly indicating an early medieval or continental origin. The item may have been cut down as the edges of some of the letters have been lost, this may have removed any loops. The edges a…
