An incomplete sheet copper alloy dagger scabbard chape of the late medieval period. This example is made from a plain copper alloy sheet, about 1mm thick, which has been folded into a conical shape. The edges have been overlapped, with iron corrosion near the top of the chape suggesting it was secured by means of a small rivet, as well as probable soldering. The base (tip) of the chape is broken and missing. The are four horizontal indenations running across the front of the chape as decoration, while the reverse is plain and undecoated. This style of chape was in use between c. AD 13…

Gilt sheet copper alloy scabbard chape for a sword or dagger, 'V'-shaped in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The sheet has been folded and joined at a vertical seam on one side, which has now torn away as a vertical strip, and the upper edge is engrailed or scalloped. Below the upper edge is a pair of circumferential parallel transverse grooves that are 2 mm apart. The metal is reddish brown with light green corrosion products and patches of gilding remain around the incised decoration and at either end of the chape on both faces.
Read (2001) illustrates similar chapes wi…

An incomplete copper-alloy sword chape of probable late Medieval or early Post Medieval date, c. AD 1450-1600. The chape is sub-triangular in plan, sub-rectangular in section, and has been manufactured in two pieces of sheet metal which have been riveted and soldered together at their edges, although these have now been flattened due to damage. The chape is missing only its very tip, which would have terminated in a rounded point. Towards the top of the chape, three rivets are visible in an inverted triangular arrangement below the upper edge, which itself has been decorated with a se…

A moulded transverse ridge is present just below the open terminal and another is situated midway along the length. A worn break runs along one edge, therefore part of the front and sides of this plate are missing. The intact sides curve backwards to create a concave reverse which is undecorated, and would have attached to the second plate, now missing. A mottled …

An incomplete copper alloy medieval sword or dagger chape. It is made from sheet metal formed from cone, but is cracked and damaged in several places with small fragments missing. Across the upper end of the outer face are two incised lines with a row of incised dots between them, above this the upper edge is shaped into what appears to be a shell shape decorated with engraved lines radiating outwards from the centre. There are three dents in the middle of each face, which have squashed and flattened the chape.
A similar example, also conical and with a decorative upper edge, was…

Sheet copper alloy dagger scabbard chape. This example is made from a plain copper alloy sheet, about 1mm thick, that has been folded into a conical shape; the edges have been overlapped and soldered together. The top opening is oval with an undecorated rim. The rest of the chape is undecorated except for six hold on the front near the rim, these holes are small and triangular and are most likely achieved using the point of a knife. The bottom edge has been folded to create a rounded base. Examples are known from archaeological contexts in London and have been dated to the 14th-16th …

A complete copper alloy medieval sword or dagger chape made from sheet metal. It is in the form of a flattened cone with a gap at the join on one face (presumably because of later damage). The outer face is decorated with a fine groove encircling the upper edge and a band of parallel grooves encircling the middle. It survives in fair condition with a green patina and some dents in places.
The simple u-shaped form of the chape suggests a relatively early 13th to mid-14th century date, after which they typically became more elaborate in form and decoration (Ward Perkins 1967, 280). A…

A medieval copper-alloy chape. It is formed by a single sheet of rolled copper-alloy. There are no rivet holes, and the surface is undecorated. It has suffered damage and is now bent in middle. Original length would have been circa 75mm. It is circa 5mm at the opening, and tapers to 3.5mm at the terminal.
According to Egan and Pritchard (2002, p.282), the length of the object (over 40mm) means that its function is uncertain, whereas similar objects less than 40mm in length are certainly lace chapes.

A complete copper alloy dagger chape of probable medieval date. The object has a bulbous rounded terminal from which an integral square sectioned shaft extends. The shaft is mostly hollow though the terminal appears to be filled with organic material as a result of its deposition. A raised circumferential collar is present around the open end of the shaft which is crushed out of shape with long cracks to three of the four corners.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The object is 32.1mm long, 17.5mm wide, 16.1mm thick and weighs 23.9g.

Copper allow sword scabbard chaped that is roughly triangular in plan with a deep concave notch on the top edge flanked by upwardly projecting sides. On to the uprights is a small worn knop on either side of the upped edge, indicating that the top edges were probably decorated with a moulded lis motif. At the base of the chape is an oblate spheroid knop. This item is heavily corroded resulting in pitting across the whole surface and the loss of some of the upper edges.
