Copper alloy scabbard chape. Conical fitting with grooves on its display face, flat behind. One end is open; the other appears to be crimped. Now squashed. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 19.8mm, Width: 25.4mm, Thickness (sheet): 0.9mm, Weight (with trapped soil): 6.32gms.

Copper alloy Scabbard Chape. Conical two part chape, comprising a tapered cylinder of overlapping sheet metal of thickness 0.4mm with an overlapping seam, and which encloses a cast hemispherical terminal. Three impressed grooves around the wider end of the chape complement the stepped edge where its wall encloses the solid terminal at its other end. There is no provision for riveted fastening, so the grooving may have been executed once the chape was fixed over the leather of a knife sheath, perhaps reinforcing a glued fastening by clenching the leather. White metal; pewter or silver Possible chape; a tapered sheet metal object, of roughly rectangular section, now filled with soil. A border at the broader end bears a horizontal row of pellets set centrally in a shallow ridge; a round hole below the gutter (diameter 3.8mm) was revealed by crumbling of soil fill of the object, and may relate to its attachment to a sheath. Torn at its broad end. Length: 44.02mm, Width: 11.98mm, Thickness: 6.09mm, Weight (part-filled with soil); 4.74gms. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1450.
