An incomplete, cast iron cannon ball of Post-Medieval date, c. 1500-1700. The solid ball is hemispherical, with the split probably occurring in antiquity. The entire surface is uneven in texture, pitted with corrosion. It's full weight can be estimated at 2.5-3lbs.

An iron post-medieval cannon ball, probably dating to the 17th century. It is cylindrical. It measures 94mm in diameter and weighs c.3000g. The size suggests that it was intended to be fired from a demi-culverin, a medium cannon in use during the late 16th and 17th century. During the First English Civil War, the manor house at Barton Blount, where this cannon ball was discovered, was garrisoned by Parliamentarian soldiers and a skirmish was fought nearby with Royalist soldiers from Tutbury Castle. It is therefore quite likely that this dates to 1644-1646.

Post Medieval cannon ball, or ball from ball mill. Cast iron with a diameter ranging between 83.6mm and 80.5mm (c. 3.3 inches. The ball weighs 1997.1g (4.4 pounds) and fails to fit into any of the accepted calibres for Civil War, or later ordnance hence the suggestion that it may have come from a ball mill. This might be supported by its lack of symmetry. A ball mill consisted of a horizontal, revolving drum which contained iron balls. The cannon ball is sphereical, 75mm in diameter, weighing 1756g (3lbs 14oz). It has been made in iron which has been presumably cast. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition with no active corrosion.
