Small cannon ball of probable Post-Medieval (English Civil War) dating to c. AD 1600 - 1700. The cannon ball is spherical. It has been made in iron which has been presumably cast. The ball is of a dark brown colour with orange flecks, small areas of slight flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition and with no obvious dents or grazes which might suggest use. Due to its size it may have been made for a hand-held cannon (possibly a dragon or serpentine) rather than for a standard sized cannon. It measures diameter 33.5mm and weighs 143 grams.

A cast spherical iron cannon ball, which based upon its diameter and weight was fired from a Falconet, a piece of small artillery with a calibre of between 2 and 2 1/2 inches, firing shot of approximately 1 pound a maximum distance of approximately 1000 paces (Roy 1975, 261-263). This example is 49.33 mm in diameter (just short of 2 inches) and weighs 485.9 grams (1.1 pounds). It has a dark brown patina and is well preserved. Falconets were in use from the late 15th to 18th centuries AD. Ian Roy (ed.) The Royalist Ordnance Papers, 1642-1646 - Part 2. Wheatley: Oxfordshire Record So…

Cannon ball of post-medieval (probably English Civil War) date (1600-1700AD). The cannonball is sub-spherical with a diameter of 78.7mm (3 inches 1/8). It weighs 1.8 kilograms (4lbs). It is made of iron which has been presumably cast, although there is no evidence of a seam or casting flange. The ball is of a mid-brown orange colour with areas of flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition; however, there are a number of areas which exhibit pitting, denting, and grazes. This might suggest either use or, more likely, damage in the soil. The size of the …

It weighs 5.2 kilograms (11.5lbs). It is made of iron which has been presumably cast. There is a small linear ridge running around part of the ball, which might be the remains of the casting flange. The ball is of a mid-brown orange colour with areas of flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition; however, there are a number of areas which exhibit pitting, denting, and grazes. This might s…
