A post medieval iron cannonball dating to c. AD 1600-1750.
The object is spherical with a slightly raised line around the centre. It is corroded on the outer surface. The diameter, of 76mm, corresponds to the Imperial measurement for the second smallest 17th century cannon, the Saker, which was approximately a 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. The name "Saker" derives from a bird of prey, and this medium sized cannon could have been manipulated relatively easily. They were popular during the Civil War, particularly during sieges. A Post Medieval cast iron cannon ball, dating to between approximately AD 1500 and AD 1700. The item is sub-spherical, there are no obvious signs of impact damage indicating use. It is possibly intended for use in a Rabinet cannon, which had a bore of 1.5 inches (38mm). Maximum diameter of the cannon ball is 42.09mm (1.65 inches), it weighs 217g (0.48lbs). The surface is corroded and pitted, and has a rusty orange colour.
