Small possible cannon ball found whilst metal detecting near to Amlwch. It is in good condition, and has a dark brown surface patina. It may be the type of cannon ball fired by a falconet cannon (Bailey 2000, 94-5). These are 1.5lbs in weight and fired from cannon with a 2 inch (5.08 cm) bore (ibid.). It was not possible to accurately date the object, but if it is a cannon ball it is likely to date from the 18th century although some sources have suggested that these cannon were in use from the 16th century. An alternative interpretation for the object is as a ball used to cru…

A possible post medieval – modern lead cannon ball. The find is spherical in shape. There is a circular perforation on one side, roughly 6mm in diameter. The perforation present is unusual. Some later variants of cannon ball or cannon ball grenades have a perforation present which would have been used for an explosive charge. If this find is a cannon ball, it is likely 18th to 19th century in date.

Corroded iron ball, very dimpled with old corrosion sites and with some small patches of active corrosion still protruding from the surface. The diameter varies from 2.933 to 3.065 inches and it weighs 3lb 8.5 oz. It is likely that the diameter has been reduced somewhat by previous corrosion so that it would have had a calibre of something over 3 inches. This would suggest that it was round shot intended for a 'minion' cannon. This type of cannon was used from the 15th to 17th centuries but it seems most likely that it would have originated from the Civil War as several skirmishes are…

A complete cast iron cannon ball. The cannon ball is spherical in shape and has a dark reddish brown patina. The cannon ball may have been fired from a minion or falcon cannon. The minion cannon had a small bore of around 3.5 inches, while the falcon had a 2.5 inch bore (Bailey 2000, 94). Both cannons, in use from the 15th century, were also used during the English civil war. Given several skirmishes are recorded on Anglesey during the civil war, it is possible the cannon ball dates from this period. The PAS database holds two similar records from the Isle of Anglesey, GAT…
