The ball was found in a garden. It is very likely that it relates to a documented skirmish which took place in the area of Redhill Common. This is the second of two balls from the Redhill area and can justifiably be linked to a short-lived rising in the summer of 1648 under the Earl of Holland which had the aim of restoring Charles I. The rising was ‘wretchedly organised and quickly suppressed’ and involved stationing outposts on Redhill Common to watch for Parliamentary troops approaching from Sevenoaks. These outposts were themselves routed by the advance from the north by three troops of horse led by Major Lewis Audeley. The findspot is about one kilometre from the Common.DistrictCertain4SUR1389351REIGATEx41047547Reigate and Banstead110192011-02-24T13:22:54ZReturned to finderSouth EastAn iron cannon ball.

An iron cannon ball, now very corroded and flaking. The ball presently weighs 330g and was probably heavier at one time.

The size of the ball suggests that it was possibly for a falconet, commonly used during the Civil War, being lighter and cheaper than other cannon (Cf Blackmore 1976: 392-398).

The size and weight of the cannon ball indicates that it may have been made for firing from a Saker or Minion type of cannon, used in Britain during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Possibly a ball of shot intended for use in a small piece of 17th century artillery such as a Rabinet or perhaps an iron ball used in an industrial function for milling and crushing.3636160017004SUR2023-06-09T11:25:30Z2023-06-09T15:08:46Z84.43PAS6482FE1A001C7B32.71814141421139651385013870SurreyTandridgeBletchingleyTQ325251.25189927-0.10994821bands.shops.handy10SUR-2FF1A6Iron11019CompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderSUR2FE1AC.jpg1229693images/smaslin/South EastPossibly32023-06-09T14:08:46.788Zfinds-11536901153690SUR-59B5DCCANNON BALLPOST MEDIEVALA cast iron ball, 53.5mm (c. 2.1 inches) in diameter and weighing 491.63g (c. 17 oz). Possibly a cannon ball from a piece of light field artillery such as a Falconet or Falcon, which had nominal bore sizes of 2 inch or 2.5 inches respectively. There are problems with identifying cannon balls found away from known military sites as iron balls like this were also used (post industrial revolution) as ball bearings and in various industrial milling operations, such as crushing chalk for whiting.3636160018004SUR2024-03-04T09:58:53Z2024-03-04T14:17:33Z491.63PAS65E59B5D001C5153.518141141421139651399214002SurreyGuildfordRipleyTQ045551.28465423-0.51012498bands.shops.handy10SUR-59B823Iron11019CastCompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderSUR-59B5DC_65e5d7f553b86.jpg1266097images/smaslin/South EastPossibly32024-03-04T14:17:33.876Z
