Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roughly half of a cast iron cannon ball most likely to be circa 18th century in date. It is 85.5mm in diameter and weighs 1507g. An enquiry has been made to the Battlefields Trust and we are awaiting a reply. It is most likely to have been used for practise in the area it was found as no battles occurred there.

A worn and corroded spherical iron object, possibly iron shot or a small cannon ball. Its surfaces are heavily corroded with extensive flaking. It measures 40.03mm in maximum surviving diameter and 192.41g (6.78 ounces) in weight. This is possibly a small iron shot or cannon ball, perhaps from a long barreled piece of artillery such as a Serpentine or Rabinet (see, for example, DENO-F42841, WAW-BF6AB1, SWYOR-4C03A3, IOW-0AFC81, WAW-45EDE1, SOM-A0A8A2 etc.). it's incomplete diameter and low weight may be a result of the extensive corrosion evident on all surfaces.

A corroded spherical iron object, possibly iron shot or a small cannon ball. Its surfaces are corroded with some flaking. It measures 49.94mm in maximum surviving diameter and 408g (approximately 14 ounces) in weight. This is possibly a small iron shot or cannon ball, perhaps from a long barreled piece of artillery such as a Falconet or similar (see, for example, SWYOR-762D10, WMID-E6FA72, SWYOR-95EAE3, SUSS-90E2B6 etc.). It is slightly under weight for shot for cannon of this type, but this may be accounted for due to its worn surfaces.

A large corroded cast lead object, possibly a weight or potentially a lead cannon shot. It is oval shaped in its current form but has suffered from extensive damage that has resulted in partial flattening to two sides in addition to multiple and crude incisions on all surfaces. The entire object measures 83.71mm in length, 68.03mm in width and 1927g (approximately 4.24 pounds) in weight. The precise function of this object remains uncertain. However, its discovery in an area that may have been subject to battle or similar activities during the Post-Medieval period raises the possibili…
