Cannon ball of post-medieval (probably English Civil War) date (1600-1700AD). The cannonball is sub-spherical with a diameter of 78.7mm (3 inches 1/8). It weighs 1.8 kilograms (4lbs). It is made of iron which has been presumably cast, although there is no evidence of a seam or casting flange. The ball is of a mid-brown orange colour with areas of flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition; however, there are a number of areas which exhibit pitting, denting, and grazes. This might suggest either use or, more likely, damage in the soil. The size of the …

This is a cast iron Post Medieval cannon ball, perhaps from the 17th or 18th century. The ball is consistent with the size of cannon known as a Falcon. Although various weights and size tables can be found for the Falcon, this ball at 2 pounds and around 2.5 inches in diameter is consistent with the type. The ball has a clear cast line around the circumference and a casting spru is evident at 90 degrees to the casting line. The Falcon was a modest cannon, around six foot in length with a level range of around 200 yards. An interesting find when associated with its find location n…

A chipped stone cannonball, probably of 16th or 17th century date. The ball is sub-spherical, chipped from a sandstone with pecked marks visible on the surface. Approximately one-third of the surface has a sooty, blackened surface, suggesting that it was fired from a cannon or powder-based artillery piece. This object is one of three examples found in the same area.

A possible cannon ball made from cast iron. It is spherical and is 42.1mm in diameter. It weighs 271g (9.5 oz). The surface of the ball is corroded and flaking. A cannon ball weighing 8ozs was fired from a Robinet cannon and this may be for a similar size cannon. These type of cannons were used in the 17th century (Blackmore 1990 Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, Royal Armouries p. 83).

Cast lead cannon ball with a diameter of 48.33mm. The object is circular, but with some pieces missing (the biggest of which is a long gash that measures 28.5mm long, 8.4mm wide and and 5 mm deep) which causes the shape to be irregular. There are many other dents and pits in the surface, which are also filled with dirt. Probably dates from the post-medieval period.
