A corroded cast iron sphere, possibly a post-medieval cannon ball of 75.5mm diameter (c. 3 inches) and 1737g. There is a prominent casting seam around the mid section which appears to have been ground down. The diameter corresponds to the Imperial measurement for the second smallest 17th century cannon, the Saker, which had a 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. This cannon was popular during the Civil War, particularly during sieges.

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An iron cannon ball weighing just over five pounds and just over three inches in diameter. This was probably fired by a Saker artillery piece. This had a calibre of 3.5" and fired a shot of about 5.25lbs. Sakers could be used either in battles or sieges. Therefore it may relate to the siege of Donnington Castle or one of the two battles of Newbury, possibly the second one (27 October 1644), where the garrison on Donnington Castle saw the approaching flank movement of the Parliamentary Army.
