The button is discoidal with a convex outer face and concave reverse. The remains of a small integral attachment loop project from the centre of the reverse. The reverse is decorated with the raise arms of the Commonwealth comprising the shields England (St George) and Ireland (the Harp) placed next to one another, dating the object to the Commonwealth period - AD 1649-60. Traces of enamel can be seen within and surrounding this design, but this is now too corroded for the colours to be seen clearly. Traces of a white metal coating is also visible on both faces.
See the following PAS records for comparison: SF-606C13, IOW-BE44C7; SOM-9AF327; HESH-1EF324; DEV-B63BC5; NMS-A66794 and SUSS-EE5213. Notably only the first example features enamelling as also seen on the present button.

It is circular in plan and domed, with a convex exterior and concave interior. From the centre of the reverse projects an integrally cast, D-shaped lug with central, circular perforation. The domed front face is unusually elaborate, containing the coat of arms of the Commonwealth comprising the shields England (St George) and Ireland (the Harp) placed next to one another. The cross of St George is inlaid with white enamel whilst the square fields surrounding it carry an enamel now rendered light green. The Harp of Ireland is rendered in the same light green enamel whilst the surrounding shield is filled with a royal blue enamel. Located above the shield are two outwardly curving pelta shaped cells inlaid with dark blue enamel. In between are positioned two opposed, inwardly curved pelta shaped cells inlaid with white enamel. Situated below the shields is in inverted pelta shaped cell inlaid with white enamel, flanked by by two rectangular cells inlaid with dark blue enamel. Flanking the shields are three sub-rectangular cells, now parallelogram-shaped, inlaid with the light green enamel.
A number of other buttons bearing the coat of arms of the Commonwealth are recorded on the database including IOW-BE44C7; SOM-9AF327; HESH-1EF324; DEV-B63BC5; NMS-A66794 and SUSS-EE5213, produced in both copper and lead alloys. A complete Post Medieval coppper-alloy button or cloak fastener dating to to circa AD 1625-1700. The button is heaxagonal in plan with a flat top and faceted sides. The reverse is hollowed concave dome. Emerging from the centre of the reverse is a rectangular loop with a drilled circular fixing hole. The front face is decorated with a central flower motif of four small circles in a quatrefoil within a plain ring within a ring of pellets. From this central motif radiates six pairs of grooved lines which flank the angles between the facets and create lines along the sides of each facet. Similar pairs of lines set at right angles to these form an inner circle around the flat top. Above the carination where the angles sides become vertical is a row of punched annulets which connect the ends of the pairs of grooves. In the cell remaining in the centre of each facet is a scrolled motif of stamped Cs and annulets. The button has traces of gilding in the punched areas and a black lacquer coating on the front.
The button is now heavily worn but identical to SOM-7ABDA7 suggested to be a possible cloak fastener dating to the 17th century AD.

Description: A complete silver post-medieval button. It is a hollow bi-convex shape, its outer face more highly domed than the reverse. There are two small circular holes to either side of the reverse and a shank projects from the centre formed from a strip of circular cross-sectioned wire bent into a loop and soldered in place. There is a small circular hole through the centre of the outer face with incised curved lines radiating outwards from this. Between some of these lines are incised double zigzag lines. It survives in good condition.
Date: 17th century
Dimensions: Length: 18.02mm, diameter of head: 12.16mm, length of shank: 7.64mm, width of shank5.45mm, thickness of shank: 1.58mm, weight: 2.31g
Discussion: Numerous similar examples have been declared Treasure, including: 2015 T359, 2017 T203, 2012 T64. Egan (2005, 50) suggests that buttons with hollow heads and two holes from the mould on the back "may not have been produced after the end of the 17th century".
