Cast copper alloy zoomorphic escutcheon from a hanging bowl dated to the Early Medieval period, c.AD 500-700.
The escutcheon is in the form of a unclear beast head and neck. The terminal has a stumped, rounded triangular snout. Sitting above the snout is the animal's head which has prominent brows with incised detail either side of the head, probably depicting eyes. Beyond the head is a slight groove, after which two worn bumps are present perhaps formally representing the ears. Behind the ears, the neck of the object curves into a C-shape. At the terminal…

A copper alloy Early Medieval hooked escutcheon from a hanging bowl, probably dating AD 500-700.
At the top of the object there is a hook that emerges from the centre of the top of the plate. The hook has a cross section that is rectilinear at one end and rounded at the other, tapering from 4.78mm wide and 4.26mm thick near the base of the hook to 2.96mm wide and 2.06mm thick just before the rounded point. The hook curves towards the back of the escutcheon. There is a semi-circular ridge across the base of the hook, in line with the top of the plate. The total depth of the hook f…

An incomplete, extremely worn copper alloy object, probably an escutcheon of a hanging bowl of Early Medieval date (AD 600-700).
The object is sub-rectangular in plan and is convex on the external face and slightly concave on the reverse. The external face of the object is decorated with scrollwork in relief that forms a geometric design. There is a central raised triangular section with two mirroring spiralling designs on either side. There is a design beneath the raised triangle, though due to a breakage at the bottom this is incomplete. At the top of t…

Copper alloy hanging bowl mount. Cast oval plate, slightly concavo-convex in section, with an integrally cast inverted pelta at its base and the stub of a substantial hook at its top, and with a narrow lentoid aperture central to the oval part of the plate. The oval plate is decorated with seven left-hand spiral motifs reserved and plated in white metal, viewed against a field of [now] off-white enamel. A small patch of pinkish tint also occurs near the top, though is probably localised staining. A similar spiral with loops beside it occupies the pelta-shaped part of the plate and is s…

An incomplete Early Medieval mount (escutcheon) from a hanging bowl dating to circa AD 550-700. The extant element of the mount consists of a sub-rectangular in plan plate which is slightly curved in section. Two rivet holes are positioned along the top edge. It terminates in an old break at either edge. The front face is decorated with a chip carved design of an uncertain type owing to heavy degradation.
Hanging bowls were manufactured in west and north Britain during the later 6th and 7th centuries AD (Brenan 1991). Though their precise purpose is unce…

The mount consists of a rearward facing hooked head, with circular yellow enamel eyes on either side, just before the blunt point. The neck has a circular cross section. The neck extends down into a lozenge body. At the base of the neck, is an oval shaped head, with indentations to indicate eyes, nose and mouth. An incomplete copper-alloy late Roman to early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) mount/escutcheon from a hanging bowl. Unusually for a hanging bowl mount it is crescentic or 'axe-shaped' with an outwards curving lower edge and inwards curving upper edge with a narrow arm projecting from its centre. This arm bends upwards at a roughly 140 degree angle before developing into a zoomorphic terminal positioned in the same plane as the rest of the mount. The upper edge of this terminal has moulded transverse ridges for eyes and a snout with a dip between creating the effect of a…

A cast copper alloy hooked escutcheon from an early Medieval hanging bowl, dating to the 7th century AD and styled in the form of a bird resting with wings folded. The mount has a teardrop shaped convex plate moulded into the form of the two folded wings, with a medial ridge along the centre line between. Each wing has a recessed field, possibly originally enamelled and decorated with small triangles and lozenges of retained metal with holes at their centre. A fragmentary cast copper alloy object, probably a hanging-bowl escutcheon of Early Medieval date, broadly dating from the 6th to early 8th century AD.
The object consists of a flat plate once circular with an original diameter of c. 26.6mm, now with damaged edges, and has the 13.7mm wide broken stump of a projection (with a maximum incomplete length of 3mm). The obverse of the object is flat in profile, rising slightly at the thickened lowest point on the plate. A medieval to post-medieval copper alloy bowl
The bowl has a flange around the circumference with 4 subrectangular nail holes. 4 have corroded square headed iron nail in situ. It appears that the flange was attached with nails to surface with an iron ring above the flange. Part of the iron ring that sat above the flange remains but is heavily corroded,
The bowl has an outside diameter of 210mm and an inside diameter of 180mm. the depth is 74.21mm. It weighs 407.06g

A complete copper alloy escutcheon dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 600-700). The object is formed of a circular disc with zoomorphic hook facing to the rear of the disc. The face of the disc is decorated with an engraved late Celtic-inspired trefoil-like design within a raised border. The recesses on the face of the disc would likely have been filled with enamel but no trace of this now survives. The hook has moulded details, from the base to the head, of an uncertain animal. The reverse of the disc is flat and undecorated.

A copper alloy circular mount or escutcheon, probably from an Early Medieval hanging bowl dating to the period c. AD 500 - 650. It is a flat disc with a sunken front face surrounded by a raised border, in the centre are three arches formed from a double raised line. The ends of each arch curve inwards forming a crescent terminal, a line then extends from the tip of each terminal, passing below the arch to connect with the neighbouring arches terminal . traces of red enamel are visible in the recesses between the lines.

Cast copper alloy cauldron fragment, c.AD 1500-1650.
A fragment of a copper-alloy vessel, probably a skillet or cauldron, dating to the late Medieval-early Post Medieval period. The sherd is from the rim and wall of the vessel; the wall is straight-sided with a slight curve. The rim is defined by a raised collar and the wall is decorated by four parallel, raised ribs which run horizontally across the sherd and it can be assumed with some certainty that these ribs would have continued around the diameter of the vessel. From the small fragment which remains the shape and style of t…

An incomplete, corroded copper alloy and enamel escutcheon from a type B or C hanging bowl of Early Medieval date (likely mid-6th to mid-7th century AD). The object is slightly convex and was once presumably circular, missing less than half its surface area but the majority of the original rim, making the original circumference uncertain.
The decoration on the front of the object consists of three trumpet-spiral “peltae”, all emanating from a shared central spiral. A probable fragment of red enamel indicates the object was likely inlaid with a red enamel field. The reverse i…

An incomplete Early Medieval mount (hook escutcheon) from a hanging bowl with champlevé enamel dating to c.AD 550-700.
The plate is sub-triangular with a rounded knop at the pointed end and a curved hook at the rounded end. Both elements are integral to the plate, which has outwardly bevelled sides resulting in a slightly concave reverse. The hook is in the form of a bird's neck and head. There are very worn short grooves on the outer longer edge of the beak perhaps delineating worn facial features. On one side of the bird's head is a circular recess filled with red enamel, perh…
