Possible ballista ball, or similar. A rough sphere formed from grey stone, 66.76 mm in diameter and +200g in weight. Smooth surface with signs of damage (wear, chips). These are difficult to date as ballista balls were in use from the Roman to the medieval era. This ball was found near a Roman coin hoard scatter (LIN-249DE5; 2022 T753). Possible ballista ball, or similar. A rough sphere formed from Chalk with flint inclusions, 79.2mm in diameter and 607g in weight. The surface is predominantly rough, with signs of damage (wear, chips and cracks). Difficult to date (ballista balls were in use from the Roman to Medieval periods), the object could also potentially be architectural, and date from any time from Roman to Modern. Two ballista balls were found in York (at 9 Blake Street) within late 3rd to 4th century deposits. One of these was of a similar size to this object, measuring 82mm in diameter, formed from a shell…
