A groundstone axe of Neolithic date, c. 3500-2100 BC. The axe is incomplete, consisting of only the butt of the axehead, which has been ground and polished into a tapering, trapezdoidal shape in plan, oval in section. Some chipping has occurred on the surface, much of which is worn, suggesting damage sustained to the axehead in antiquity.

An iron axehead of uncertain date, probably Post-Medieval to Modern. The axe consists of a sub-triangular head with a slight flaring to the blade from the body. In section, the axe is wedge-shaped at its blade, with a rectangular section to the body and a slightly tapered/pointed butt. The surface has been covered with corrosion, obscuring details in the shape and how the axe was fit to a shaft/haft.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy axe of Bronze Age date. Only the corner of the blade end survives intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. It is rectangular in form, triangular section with one side and part of the sharpened blade surviving. The fragment has a dark green patina and measures 15.90mm in width, 9.86mm in length, 5.09mm in thickness and 2.33g in weight. This is a fragment from the blade of a Bronze Age axe, however due to the preservation of the object it is uncertain whether it belongs to a flat axe, a palstave or socketed axe. It may therefore date to any po…

Stone perforated axe-hammer of probable very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date (2500-1800 BC). Smaller axe-hammers are also known as Battle Axes and some of the smaller examples have been recorded as perforated maces (mace-heads). The differences between these types / classifications are uncertain and the artefact type as a whole is in need of reassessment in line with modern discoveries and approaches to artefact studies. The axe-hammer is formed from a pecked and ground igneous rock. This rock has been identified from observation of the surface by Daniel Lockett (Shropshire …

A groundstone axe of the Neolithic period, c . 3500-2100 BC. The axe has been ground from a fine mudstone of grey-green colour that is possibly from the Langdale geology of the Lake District. The axe is incomplete, leaving approximately half of the axe from the centre of the body to the ground edge. In plan view, the axe is rectangular, though irregular; in section at the break the axe is oval; in profile the axe is triangular with convex sides. The axe has been ground very smooth, but there are a number of shallow scratches on both faces, probably from modern agriculture. If th…

A complete, but encrusted and corroded, iron axe head of Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. It has a curved and flaring blade. The axe expands to the poll end, which curves downwards, is flat and rectangular in form. The eye through which the axe would have originally have been hafted is oval and partly filled with iron corrosion that might be covering mineralised wood. All surfaces of the axe show signs of extensive corrosive iron products and encrustation, but the axe appears complete. It measures 146mm in length, 67mm in width at poll end, 28mm in height at poll end, and 68mm in height at …

An iron axe which is probably Medieval or Post Medieval in date. The axe has a looped socket formed by bending the end of the axe round and fusing it to the side of the blade. There is some damage to the edges of the blade. The blade is slightly curved downwards from the socket, and the lower edge flares. It tapers and thickens towards the socket. It is badly corroded. The base of the socket, which is D shaped in profile, has a slight pointed projection. Axes are hard to date as they do not change much in style from the Roman period through to the Post-Medieval. However, it is lik…

A Neolithic flint axe which has been shaped by flaking. It is an axe with a thin tapering butt, classified by Manby as an A3 type. There is surviving cortex on one face at the butt end. It is an irregular pointed oval in section and is an elongated ovoid shape in plan. The butt tapers to a point but remains nearly as thick as the centre of the axe. The cutting edge is slightly pointed in plan and has been sharpened with some smaller removals. The flint is patinated and is white with large tan blotches. The flaking causes the median margin of the axes to be wavy or scalloped along the …

A small body fragment of a cast, copper-alloy Sompting socketed axe of early Iron Age date. Only a small sub-rectangular section of the main body of the axe survives with the breaks indicating its fragmentation in antiquity. The reverse is plain but the obverse displays remains of two parallel ribs terminating one pellet-in-circlet each. There are parallels in Pendleton (1999), no. 125 and 130. The axe is likely to date from the eighth century BC. The length is 20.14mm, the width is 16.79mm, the thickness is 2.67mm and it weighs 4.00g. Dot Boughton notes: 'Complete Early Iron Age s…
