The object is sub-rectangular in plan and a pointed oval in cross-section. The butt end of the object terminates with a worn break. The cutting edge is very worn on one side, possibly due to damage which occurred during antiquity which has since been worn down. Dimensions:- 79.2mm in length, 51.9mm, in width, 25.4mm thick. The axehead measures 24mm in length from the start of taper to blade. Towards the butt end it measures 52mm from widest point to break po…

A stone axe head dating to the mid Neolithic to early Bronze Age (c 3700-2500BC). The axe is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a convex curved blade, tapering sides and a broken indented butt. The curved blade is not symmetrical, sloping down on one side and has slight knapping/abraded marks on the blade. The faces of the axe have very deep abraded grooves, probably post-depositional damage. The stone is a light yellowish brown colour, possibly of a Lake District stone.

Copper alloy, possibly votive, small axe pendant, probably Roman in date (c AD43-300). The pendant consists of a triangular axe-shaped body and a circular attachment loop, with a raised collar between the body and loop. The loop hole is set at the same angle to the 'blade', which suggests it may have served another function other than as a pendant. The object is chunky and the blade has a wide tip. No close comparison could be found, though the green patina is consistent with a Roman date. See records BERK-30CF41 and NARC-5E5A98 for similar objects.

A chipped flint axe (not polished), dating to the Neolithic period. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper from the widest point at the cutting edge to a relatively narrow rounded butt. Both long edges taper evenly and the axe is broadly symmetrical. The axe is knapped from a mottled grey coloured flint with considerable mid-pale grey and milky white inclusions. There is a small oval of the original cortex remaining on one face towards the butt end. The axe is extensively flaked on each face. On each face ther…

Hand forged iron axe dating to the Medieval period. The axe has a triangular socket and flared blade. W.L Goodman (The History of Woodworking Tools, 1964) suggests axes of this shape are uncommon in the medieval period (although popular in illustrations). They come into use in the late Medieval period and continue through to the 19th century for general purpose domestic use. The object is corroded and has a reddish brown patina. Cast iron axe probably dating from the Medieval to the Post-Medieval period. The object consists of the blade and part of the butt of the object. The base of the blade is flat while the upper half flares upwards. The cutting edge is 3mm thick. The butt has broken however the shaft hole appears to have been tear-shaped. The object is very corroded and therefore can not be dated more accurately. It has a rough orange brown patina.

Cast blade of an iron axe, the socket end is missing from an old break and the blade is highly corroded. It is rectangular in cross section and triangular in plan. It is quite a small axe and very thick, 22.34mm. Axes do not change a great deal between the Roman and Modern periods and features that can suggest more precise dating, such as the socket shape and the way the blade joins the socket, are missing in this example.

Prehistoric polished stone axe dating to the Neolithic period, (8300-4500BC). It is a pointed oval in plan and oval in cross-section. The butt is rounded and from the butt the sides narrow slightly towards the cutting edge. The cutting edge slopes downwards on one side. The end of the butt and one face of the butt end are smooth and polished. The axe has been made of an unusually soft stone and therefore all other surfaces have been damaged and the polished surface flaked off leaving a rough surface. The lower surface has been damaged more perhaps as a result of how it lay in the g
