Half of a perforated axe hammer or "mace head" made of a light redddish brown quartzite pebble. The perforated object is sub-oval in plan, with a flattened oval section. The perforation was formed by pecking with a hard, pointed stone from both sides leaving subtle raised area near the centre of the perforation. This object is different than other broken mace-heads or axe hammers on the database, as its proximal end  has been deliberately worn down at a 45 degree angle to the perforation. It is possible that this object was broken and then re-used as a pestel-like t…

A near complete but reworked knapped, ground and polished flint axehead of probable later Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe is knapped from a light grey coloured flint with a milky white coloured surface patina. There is considerable mid orange staining across the reworked surface and this is possibly as a result in the burial environment - possibly indicating deposition within soils that are iron rich or have a predilection towards iron panning / waterlogging. The axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper fr…

A ground stone axe head dating to the early to mid Neolithic (c. 3500 - c. 2500 BC). The axe is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a convex curved blade 64.95mm wide, tapering sides 108.8mm long and a squared off butt c. 36mm wide. The blade has been created by polishing; it is the only part of the otherwise coarse axe that has been polished. The curve created is not symmetrical and has been very slightly abraded, whether by use or by post-depositional damage. The sides taper continuously from the blade. The longitudinal and transverse cross-sections are pointed oval. The thickest point is …

A polished flint axe head dating to the early to mid Neolithic (c. 3500 - c. 2500 BC). The flint has a weathered and iron stained pale to mid-orange colour. It is roughly triangular in plan with a convex curved blade 52.5mm wide, tapering sides 97.9mm long and a broken butt which is now 22.5mm wide but clearly narrowed further originally. The sides taper continuously from the blade but the angle of taper sharpens slightly about half way along. As well as the broken butt there are some chips in the sides and chips along the blade edge. Although these chips are not recent it is hard to t…

A complete flint axe of Neolithic date (4500 BC – 2000 BC). The implement is a mixture of light grey and weathered white on its surface. It is symmetrical in plan, with slightly serpentine edges when viewed from the side; the longitudinal edges have been slightly 'battered'. In cross-section the axe is sub-lozengiform. In plan, the butt is evenly curved, as is the cutting edge which is also semi-circular. One face is less worked towards the butt end; there is a stop beyond this ridge which corresponds with a depression on the other surface. On this same face there is a relatively u…

A worked flint axe of Neolithic date (c. 3500 - c. 2100 BC). The implement has been extensively knapped into a sub-oval shape. One terminal is slightly pointed (W.: 26mm), the other is rounded (W.: 41.25mm). One surface is flatter than the other and this surface bears a central trace of the external cortex. The rounded butt end of the implement bears the finest working. The is damage to both of the edges which have possibly been used for hammering. The axe slightly tapers from the butt end; the axe is therefore wedge-shaped and oval in section. The other terminal is slightly pointed, …

Incomplete Neolithic polished axe knapped from a cream stone. The axe has a worn break with only the butt end surviving. The axe has been polished over the entire surface, however the grinding was not deep enough to remove all of the flaking scars. The butt end has been left partically flaked, and it is slightly damaged. The two narrow sides have been ground further to create a slightly flattened edge, giving the axe a double convex cross section, with flattened rather than curved ends. In profile, the axe is widest at the break, with convex sides tapering towards the butt end. The sur…

Neolithc ground stone axe of heavily weathered igneous rock. The rock is a light green-grey colour, with one surface darker than the other. The axe is sub-rectangular in plan with a squared off butt-end expanding out towards the rounded blade end. In profile the axe is lenticular; It has been ground to increase the curve towards the pointed blade end, and the butt-end is flat. There is a circular indentation on both edges approximately half way along the length of the axe. The axe is widest after these indentations on the blade side. It has an oval/round cross section at the butt-end, …

A Neolithic flint axe complete except for a small number of recent flakes. The blade of the axe is rounded and is missing a large flake from one surface. From here the axe tapers gradually to the butt end (W. 85.5-35mm) which is missing three large and some smaller flakes from the same surface, but would probably have been rounded. The surface from which the flakes are missing has a pale/white patina, except where the flakes are missing, indicating that these are the result of recent damage. The recent flakes reveal a beige/grey flint evident on the other surface where although the…
