The face of the token features, in relief, is a flat topped shield with a cross (St George cross?) and central raised pellet surrounded by a border of small pellets. The design is stamped slightly off the flan. This is a probably Post-Medieval token, although its construction suggests an alternative possible use as a gaming counter.

A late Medieval lead token. There is a raised cross on one face, with a pellet in each quarter. There is perhaps the remains of some further detail on the other face, but this is too worn to make out. The object bears strong similarities to a token illustrated in Fletcher (2005, p.40), which is suggested to be of 15th century date and is one of a series from this period that appear to have been strongly influenced by contemporary coin designs. This particular example is crudely executed, but the similarities are enough to suggest that this is probably of a similar date. The reverse is…

A lead uniface token dating to the period AD 1250 to 1800. The object is sub-circular in plan and decorated on one side with a long cross motif which is fairly common on tokens at this time. This could be intended to be similar to medieval coins. The other side is irregular. Lead tokens are difficult to date precisely and could be Medieval to Post Medieval in date (1250-1800 AD). The majority of lead tokens are thought to date to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, c. 1600-1800 as increasing numbers of dated tokens are found.

A Medieval/Post-Medieval lead uniface token, measuring 18.6mm in diameter, c.1.6mm in thickness and weighing 2.3g. It has two small open holes, probably originating from the manufacturing process. Obverse: Raised cross hatching. Lead tokens were easy to produce and widely circulated; they appear in the Medieval period and ones with simple decoration continued in use throughout both the Medieval and Post Medieval period. Therefore, a general date of c. 1250-1800 is suggested for this token.

A cast, lead token possibly converted to a token from a single disc off a cloth seal. The edges are smooth, however, with no obvious sprue where the two discs of a cloth seal may have been joined together. The arms of Stuart are on one side with a mullet or cinqefoil to the right hand side of the shield, all within a circular, beaded and reeded border. On the reverse is a crudely scratched cross similar to other lead tokens reported. These arms were in use from 1603 to 1688 but with a break from 1649 to 1660 for the Interregnum.

The reverse is uncertain, as no reverse image is supplied, possibly indicatingthat it is uni-faced. It is particularly large, measuring 41mm in diameter. A uniface lead token, probably dating from the Post-Medieval period. The token has been cast in a sub-circular shape, and has relief cast decoration of a pellet-ended cross with a wedge in each angle. A cross has been scratched into the reverse. According to Gordon Bailey ('Finds Identified', pp.10-14), the majority of cast lead tokens date from the 17th and 18th Centuries, and they are associated with rural areas. Their exact function is uncertain; they may have been used as gambling tokens, as a form of low denomination currency when small change was in short supply, or as a form …

A circular lead token dating from the post Tudor period, 1600-1800 AD. One side has the letters E P with 5 pellets in relief, the other is blank apart from a faintly incised cross. The token has a diameter of 22.16mm, thickness 2.73mm, weight 9.32g. For reference see Fletcher 2005. Leaden Tokens and Tallies. Roman to Victorian p. 54/55. Tokens like this were probably used as small change because the crown did not produce enough coins. The initial probably refer to the tradesman who issued the token.

A cast lead unifaced token. The token is 24.4mm in diameter, 2.4mm thick and weighs 8.2 grams. The design is uncertain; it may be a bird with a cross or steeple behind. The lack of clarity of the image was probably caused by the mould rather than wear on the token. Numerous other tokens and lead objects have been found close to the findspot of this item.

A circular token of cast lead, decorated on one side with geometric, high relief deign. The design is in the form of a rectalinear cross, with each arm divided into two 'forks', thus forming an 8-pointed star. The reverse is unornamented. This type of artefact could be used as a gaming piece or a token or weight. Precise dating is confounded by their continued use and conservative form throughout the medieval and early postmedieval periods. They feature are a wide variety of decorative motifs, but most cannot be tightly dated or provenanced.

Fragment of a lead token, dating from the early Post-Medieval period. The obverse is highly worn, and the central motif is not identifiable. There are some traces of a possible inscription around the diameter, but this is also not legible. The reverse shows a raised chevron in the centre, with F/P to either side. This is below the straight arms of a probable cross. The central motif is surrounded by raised triangles with recessed chevrons underneath. There are traces of an inscription around the diameter, but this is not discernible.

Sub-circular lead token, probably medieval. It has been mis-struck as the design is not central. It has writing on both sides which appears to be in the cyrillic alphabet which suggests it comes from around Russia. It is probably a trader's token and this would explain how it was found in England as Hartlepool was a trading port. The crossed keys design is used as the symbol of St. Peter, the gatekeeper of heaven for the Catholic faith. This could indicate that the company who made this token wanted to be associated with religion.
