The heads of two wrought iron nails which are thickly coated or embedded in lead, probably poured to solidify around the head and upper shank of the nails. Patinated overall. Large hand wrought iron nail with a large boss like square shaped head with a distinct D shaped cross section. The shank of the nail is square and broken. The surface of the nail suffers from active laminating corrosion. A direct parallel has not been found, but the shear size suggests that it was not for domestic furniture, instead it is suggested that it might be an iron nail from a studded timber door, or possibly from a boat. A date is also difficult to suggest - it is possibly ancient but as it is hand made it could date from as late as 1900. The iron nail measures, 38.7 mm

Iron nail. A tapered wrought iron rectangular section shank with a flat sub-rectangular head, together forming a T-shape when viewed in profile. The shank is lightly bent. The mass of the object suggests good survival of its metal core and therefore, from an open field context, probably a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Height: 57.2mm, Length (head): 36.5mm, Width (head): 28.9mm, Thickness (shank): 11.5mm, Weight: 41.39gms

Iron and lead nail. A small tapered wrought iron nail with its head - if such there is - sandwiched between the halves of a folded rectangular strip of cast lead sheet 2.6mm thick. The use of the lead sheet here is a quirky variation on its use to sheath an iron nail head where it was desirable to retard its corrosion; the lead would more usually be poured in a molten state to achieve this effect, or formed into an annular washer. The nail shank is now angled. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Height (overall, as found): 16.5mm, Length (lead): 21.5mm, Width (lead): 19.1mm, W…

An iron nail with a sphere of lead round the shaft, of Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1600 - 1900. The nail is rectangular in cross section, and has a rectangular head, wider than the shank, but no thicker. The head of the nail is bent over to meet the lead mass. It is uncertain whether this was done intentionally or is as a result of damage. The shank of the nail is broken off 4mm from the base of the lead. The object is 22.6mm long and 15.8mm in diameter. It weighs 20.72g. The lead may have been used to secure the nail into a cavity, or may have been intended to cover the…

Iron nail. Wrought iron nail or stud with a large possibly facetted lightly concavo-convex square head, and with a tapered rectangular-section wedge-shaped shank. This would be apt to the reinforcing of a door, a usage recorded archaeologically in the region from the 1680s (at the Hull Citadel - Foreman, M. and Goodhand, S. 1996, 'The Construction of Hull Citadel', in Post-Medieval Archaeology vol. 30, 143-185, page 169, fig. 13, ), and no doubt of long standing then. The good preservation of metal suggested by its mass may suggest a post-medieval date, and the object was perhaps only…

A complete iron Medieval fiddle head nail dating to between c. AD 1050-1350. The nail is rectangular in cross section and slightly thicker on one side when seen in plan than the other. The top of the nail is rectangular in plan. Below this the pin extends which is triangular in shape. The nail is 23.7mm long, 16.0mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 4.48 grams. A similar example is illustrated in Clark (1995, 86, No 64a) and given a 'Norman' date which cites another having been found in an 11th century Midden (Farley 1976, 250, Nos12-13). A similar but smaller headed nail is also …

Two possible iron nails of Manning's Type 9 possibly dating to the Roman period. They have globular heads and stems of varying lengths. Both examples are quite short and were probably primarily used in upholstery and furniture construction, with two copper-alloy examples of this type being used to attached a corner binding to a wooden box from Butt Road, Colchester (Crummy 1983, Fig. 90, 2193).

A group of four iron nails of uncertain date. They are irregular in section, but tending towards a square section, which can indicate hand forging. However, handmade nails have not changed in design since the Roman period, and continued to be made well into the 19th century and beyond. It is unusual for such small pieces of iron to survive in the ground, perhaps suggesting that they cannot be more than a few hundred years old. The nails all have faceted heads, and two of them are large and chunky with a median band round the head.
