A complete iron nail possibly associated with nearby finds dating to the early medieval period. The nail is very corroded with a thick layer of rust and soil which has multiple cracks in its surface. The nail appears to be hand made with a square shaped slightly domed head, which tapers gradually into the shank. The length of the shank is 62mm, is oblong in cross section and tapers to a flattened end at the distal tip. The widest point across the head (diagonally) is 31mm and the narrowest width across the head is 26mm. The widest face of the of the shank tapers from 17mm…

Iron and lead nail. A small tapered wrought iron nail with its head - if such there is - sandwiched between the halves of a folded rectangular strip of cast lead sheet 2.6mm thick. The use of the lead sheet here is a quirky variation on its use to sheath an iron nail head where it was desirable to retard its corrosion; the lead would more usually be poured in a molten state to achieve this effect, or formed into an annular washer. The nail shank is now angled. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Height (overall, as found): 16.5mm, Length (lead): 21.5mm, Width (lead): 19.1mm, W…

Iron nail. Wrought iron nail or stud with a large possibly facetted lightly concavo-convex square head, and with a tapered rectangular-section wedge-shaped shank. This would be apt to the reinforcing of a door, a usage recorded archaeologically in the region from the 1680s (at the Hull Citadel - Foreman, M. and Goodhand, S. 1996, 'The Construction of Hull Citadel', in Post-Medieval Archaeology vol. 30, 143-185, page 169, fig. 13, ), and no doubt of long standing then. An iron L-shaped nail or hook. The nail shaft is circular in cross-section and has bar projecting at 90 degrees from the shaft. The terminal of the bar is downward pointing. Broadly similar examples are illustrated in Manning, but as this nail is unstratified it is difficult date with any certainty.

Iron L-shaped nail or wall hook. The nail is circular in cross-section and has a curved 'beak-like' terminal. The pointed end of the shank is bent to a right angle, which may have been done after the nail was driven into the wood in order to make good the terminal. The nail could have been used as a wall hook roof tile clamp.

Iron clench bolts or clench nails, consisting of a rectangular-sectioned shank and a square head at either end. About 45 have been found to date from the same area, but it is difficult to assign a date to them. They vary in length, but are in the main between 45mm and 70mm. Clench bolts were often used in the construction of ships and doors. Probably post-medieval or modern in date.
