Iron Clench bolt fragment. Diamond shaped rove and shank of a clench bolt; the shank is of rectangular section. Though associated with Early Medieval shipbuilding, clench bolts were also used for building and household works in the Anglo-Scandinavian areas of the country, and for shipbuilding as late as the 15th century, as shown by excavated fragments of ship timber from Hull. Suggested date: Medieval, 1000-1500. Length: 58mm, Width (rove) 45.9mm, Length (rove): 53mm, Weight: 98.9gms.

Iron possible clench nail fragment. Wrought iron diamond-shaped rove with a probably rectangular-section shank running up to it. This may alternatively be a diamond-headed handmade nail used in a similar setting, but the rhomboid form more usually denotes a rove. Though associated with early boats, the clench nail was used more widely for fastening wooden structural elements. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length (rove): 37.7mm, Width: 31.1mm, Weight: 55.30gms.

Iron clench bolt. Wrought iron bolt with a diamond shaped head and a shank of indeterminate section which passes through a diamond-shaped rove - which is rove and which head is uncertain; one of these end plates is chipped. The clench bolt was used in ship-building from the 7th century to the 15th, and also for domestic purposes; clench bolts might also appear where ship timber has been reused. The context here may suggest an Early Medieval date, 850-950. Length (overall): 27.5mm, Width (rove or head): 31.8mm, Weight: 20.20gms.
