A cast silver gilt looped portion of a post-medieval dress fastener. The item is sub-triangular in shape and is formed of the head and wings of a cherub. Below the head is a large open D-shaped loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. Above the head are two smaller sub-circular attachment loops, through which thread would pass to sew the fastener into a garment. In between these two smaller loops is a small knop on the top of the head. Although in an un-cleaned condition, much of the detail of the cherub's face and the feathers of the wings are cl…

The dress fastener is broadly rectangular in form with a circular suspension loop above the moulded and openwork body decorated with scrolled floral designs. A blunted projection at the base of the fastener does not appear to be broken, neither do the two projections flanking it - this may not have had a hook, rather it was sewn to the clothing through the holes in the body and an opposing fitting hooked into the attachment loop. Dimensions: 17.8mm long, 16.5mm wide, 1.5m…

The loops thus form a trefoil shape around the central sub-triangular body. The centre of the piece is decorated with what is probably the head of a cherub moulded in relief. The cheeks of the cherub are puffed out, and puffs of air lead from the mout…

Description: Incomplete post medieval silver dress fastener. Less than half remains. It consists of an oval or circular openwork plate, with a complete trapezoidal loop projecting and flaring away from the plate. Less than a quarter of the way around the edge of the plate from the loop is a projecting rounded pierced lug or circular sewing loop, suggesting that the trapezoidal loop is a catchpiece or eye rather than an attachment loop. On the inner edge of the trapezoidal loop, a central rectangular-sectioned projection engraved with a series of transverse grooves runs towards the cen…
