A complete silver mount, strap fitting or dress fastener of probable late Medieval to Post Medieval date.
The object consists of an integral flat plate broadly oval in plan, divided into two asymmetrical halves; the larger (14.2mm wide, 6.5mm long, 1.7mm thick) half is decorated on its obverse face by three lobes radiating from the centre of the half’s lower edge. The lobes’ rounded edges form the outer edge of the half and are defined by two incised grooves running to the outer edge. The lobes have concave faces, especially the central lobe. Treasure Case 2019 T652. Description: An incomplete silver gilt dress fastener / dress hook of late medieval date. The dress fastener is broadly rectangular in form with a circular suspension loop above the moulded and openwork body decorated with scrolled floral designs. A blunted projection at the base of the fastener does not appear to be broken, neither do the two projections flanking it - this may not have had a hook, rather it was sewn to the clothing through the holes in the body and an opposing fitting hooked into the attachment loop.
Dimensions: 17.8mm long, 16.5mm wide, 1.5m…

The rest of the object consists of a moulded design around a central hole or eye, now incomplete due to old breaks. 2012 T329 Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire
I have examined an object found at Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire. It a silver coin that has been converted into a brooch or clothes fastening by the addition of attachments to one side: a round eye that could enable it to be sewn to a garment and a hook. These attachments are still in place and in good condition. A fragment of the coin itself has broken off. The 'front; of the coin (i.e. the opposite side to where the attachments have been added and thus the side intended for display) has been gilded. The coin is a silver maille tierce of Philipp…

The upper face has a cast design consisting of three raised hollow collets positioned along the lower edge of the mount. The internal depression on each is even but does not seem to be designed to hold a stone of paste setting. Between the three raised collets two lesser ridges or arcs are present. An irregular ci…

A medieval fitting, rectangular in shape, with one undecorated half slightly damaged at its corners, and an aperture of roughly square shape in the centre. The other half consists of a band of cabling or rope-work with a crest of conjoined fleur-de-lys. This decorative fitting may have been used as a dress accessory or as the mount on a box or a book cover. On the reverse are the remains of two studs, which would have formed the means of attachment. There are also ridges characteristic of using a cuttlefish bone as a mould.

A Medieval/Post-Medieval silver double-ended dress fastener (14th - 16th century).
Curator's report:
Silver artefact finely made from twisted wire, two sharply pointed ends curved over to form an agraffe.
This appears to be a double strap attachment or garter hook, of a type fashionable in the late 15th Century. They are sometimes decorated with applied plaques or decorative elements, see a four-pronged one with a Tudor rose, in TAR 2005, nos. 695, also a three-pronged one, no. 696, both dated by their decoration or related pictorial evidence to the la…

Silver dress hook, cast in the form of a scallop shell. At the base of the shell is a recurving hook for attachment; opposite this, a small attachment loop on the edge of the shell, two further loops at the base of the hook. Reverse plain. Length: 2.9mm. 15th-16thCentury. The hook is in one plane, and can be compared with similar dress hooks cast in copper-alloy. Silver versions appear to be relatively rare survivals. This hook may be a precursor of the more familiar type of hook reported through the Treasure Act, which is in two planes and has both hook and bar attachment. The scallo…

Catch-piece from a dress fastener, made from copper alloy. The front edge is rectilinear, with a neatly cut rectangular slot measuring 12 x 4 mm. Behind the slot, the object has a small circular central hole; it then tapers to a point. At the point is a concave curve which looks like the remains of a second hole, in line with the first. Given this, it would seem likely that the object had broken to its present tapered shape, were it not for the fact that scoring lines can just be seen along the edge on both faces. Those on the upper face could be decoration, but as they appear on b…
