An almost complete cast copper alloy strap fitting or dress fastener. The object consists of an oval plate with a rectangular bent projection for attachment (now broken). There are loops on both sides of the bent projection and one on the point, on the opposite end. The plate itself has been decoratively stamped and features a floral design. The surface is mid greenish-brown in colour. The reverse is undecorated. This fitting probably dates to the 17th - 18th century.

A cast copper-alloy dress accessory being the looped fitting from a hooked tag of probable post medieval date (1600-1700). The plate of the hooked tag is broadly oval in plan with a series of projecting looped knops (some of which have been pierced) positioned evenly around the central plate. An integral rectangular loop (which has broken) is present at one end. This loop (female) would have taken the opposite hook (male) fitting and acted as a closing device on a cloak or dress. Post Medieval double-hooked dress fastener, part of one integral hook missing. The plate with elaborately shaped sides and edges is decorated in counter-relief with scrolls and foliar motifs around a frame enclosing an inscription, MARIA, probably a reference to the Virgin. Plate 45.5 x 25.5mm. Overall length estimated at 66mm. Thickness 1.8mm. This is much more elaborate than fasteners found in Norwich (Norwich Households fig.9), and more akin to an example from Amsterdam (Baart et al. 1977 cat. no.160. 16th century

Post medieval cast copper alloy dress hook, 16-17th century, similar in style to Read (2008; pg 172, 646) early post medieval blunt-hooked and eye clasp Class A, Type 2. Rectangular loop is broken off. Sub-triangular in shape with three circular attachment loops, one at each corner. Running longitudinally down the centre of the obverse are 8 short transverse raised ridges with foliate decoration around. Traces of tinning/silvering on the obverse & possibly the reverse. Weight 4.7mm, length 33.9mm and width 21.6mm-7.3mm. Similar to WILT-BA0526.

Incomplete sheet copper alloy clasp fastener, pressed with a pattern of foliage. The eye for the hook is broken and open and the side attachments are also incomplete, but the two loops, one on each side of the eye, are still intact. These loops would have allowed the fastener to be stitched onto the item of clothing. Bailey (2004) illustrates a very similar example with the same pattern of foliage on page 100, Fig.2.43, which is dated to the 17th century.

Cast copper alloy hook fastener. The object is ovoid with a rectangular hole. There are two circular perforations at the outside base of this rectangular projection. On the opposite side of the oval is another eye. The decoration consists of alternate moulded and segmented lines with a central design of spirals to either side of an indeterminate description. There are double spiral-decorated knops in the centre of the two long sides.

Eye section of a two-part post medieval copper-alloy dress fastener. The plate is egg shaped with a broad rounded outer end narrowing to a rounded base by the loop. It is shallowly convex. One half of a copper-alloy hasp and clasp fastener of suggested 17th century AD date (G. Bailey; 2004; pp. 100). No exact parallel could be found for this piece, which represents the plate into which the hooked half of the device would have fitted. Copper alloy hooked clasp dating to the early Post-Medieval period, (1500-1600). The object has a rectangular attachment loop below which is another oval openwork loop. On each side of the object are three uneven knops. The hook curves backwards and is almost complete. The object has a mid green patina and is in good condition. The object conforms to Read’s Class E, Type 1 of rectangular/sub-rectangular sharp-hooked clasps. A similar example is no. 301, p89, Read, (2008).

It consists of a piece of circular sectioned wire which has been curled to form two spirals with a protruding loop inbetween. This may be the eye component of a hook and eye fastener and is probably Post Medieval in date.

A corroded, but complete cast copper-alloy Post-Medieval toggle. It has a circular cross-section but is pointed oval shape in plan. Cast integrally there is a flat-sectioned arm coming from its side which terminates in two small circular loops (set together like a figure of eight). The metal is red-brown in colour with overlying mid/dark green corrosion product. Such objects have been found all over the country and recorded on this database: see, for example, SF-6E4BF6. Generally, the arm has been found to be perpendicular to the main element.

An incomplete hooked dress fastener with a scalloped edge, probably a sexfoil, with three foils extant, each surmounted by a dome, probably attached with solder. Each dome is decorated with a central nipple within a cable-like filigree ring, five other similar rings and another around the base. The attachment loop is attached with solder on the reverse. The hook and about half of the plate, including the centre, in which there may have been a separate inserted element, are missing. Read 2008 Class D Type 10. 16th century.
