Each boss is encircled by rope-like filigree decoration and projecting knops. Originally at the centre of the fastener, between the three bosses, would have been another element; probably a form of flower head projection which has since been lost. A small fragment of the pin / clip which held it in place has survived (but is loose / detached from the fastener). The outer edge of the back plate is decorated…

Dress fitting, oval with a rectangular loop at one end and a kidney shaped protrusion to each side. Either side of the loop, and at the distal end, are small loops for sewing the fitting onto a garment. The main field is inlaid with enamel, the design now difficult to interpret but appears to have consisted of round sided triangles separated by bands of undecorated metal. The main colour was pale blue but two oval fields may have contained green enamel which is more degraded than the blue. Around the main panel is a band inlaid with what appears to have been white enamel, traces of whi…

A 16th century silver gilt-dress accessory with three recurving hooks with tapering points, and a fourth hook at the top, which recurves to the front of the item to form a loop, perhaps to act as a suspension loop. The body of the item is circular with seven knops around the circumference. Attached to the centre is a sheet silver disc, cut to resemble petals which are reminiscent of a daisy (S. Brown, pers comm). The disc is secured by a central hemispherical silver-gilt rivet, which itself resembles the eye of a daisy. An illustration of a daisy depicted in a similar way can be seen …

A cast, copper alloy toggle dating from the post-Medieval period, 1600-1800 AD. It consists of a rounded body in the shape of a pointed oval, from one side of which extends a short, circular shaft ending in a pair of rings positioned side by side. The toggle has a patchy, dark green patina. It is 26.9mm long, 22.7mm wide and 8.2mm thick. It weighs 8.68gm. There are many examples on the PAS Database; DENO-D53724 lists many others. The patchy patina of this example would seem to support it being a toggle to fasten clothing.
