The dress fastener consists of two cast hollow hemi-spherical domes on a sheet metal back plate and a separately cast loop on the reverse. Each dome is decorated with a moulded ring of 'filigree' at the base and with three further 'filigree' circles of equal size on the dome. In the centre of each circle is a smaller circle, each of which has a small boss in the centre. There are three further small circles between the large circles and the edge of each hemi-sphere. Part of one half of a probable sheet copper alloy two-piece dress fastener, probably of seventeenth century date. The fastener would have formerly had three holes for sewing onto cloth, one at the distal end and one on each side. Just one of the side holes survives intact. The end hole has broken off entirely. Because the hook or loop at the proximal end is missing, it is not possible to say which half of the two-piece fastener this object represents. The engraved decoration on the front of the fastener consists of a tall flower with stem and side leaves, and ring and dot decoration ar…

Silver dress hook, cast in the form of a scallop shell. At the base of the shell is a recurving hook for attachment; opposite this, a small attachment loop on the edge of the shell, two further loops at the base of the hook. Reverse plain. Length: 2.9mm. 15th-16thCentury. The hook is in one plane, and can be compared with similar dress hooks cast in copper-alloy. Silver versions appear to be relatively rare survivals. This hook may be a precursor of the more familiar type of hook reported through the Treasure Act, which is in two planes and has both hook and bar attachment. The scallo…

Incomplete sheet copper alloy clasp fastener, pressed with a pattern of foliage. The eye for the hook is broken and open and the side attachments are also incomplete, but the two loops, one on each side of the eye, are still intact. These loops would have allowed the fastener to be stitched onto the item of clothing. Bailey (2004) illustrates a very similar example with the same pattern of foliage on page 100, Fig.2.43, which is dated to the 17th century.

Loop part of a two part cast copper alloy dress fastener of Post-Medieval, seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700).
