Description: Incomplete silver-gilt dress fastener or dress hook. The plate of the dress fastener is trifoliate in plan with a circular protruding boss in the centre of each lobe. Each boss is encircled by rope-like filigree decoration and projecting knops. Originally at the centre of the fastener, between the three bosses, would have been another element; probably a form of flower head projection which has since been lost. A small fragment of the pin / clip which held it in place has survived (but is loose / detached from the fastener). The outer edge of the back plate is decorated…

A 16th century silver gilt-dress accessory with three recurving hooks with tapering points, and a fourth hook at the top, which recurves to the front of the item to form a loop, perhaps to act as a suspension loop. The body of the item is circular with seven knops around the circumference. Attached to the centre is a sheet silver disc, cut to resemble petals which are reminiscent of a daisy (S. Brown, pers comm). The disc is secured by a central hemispherical silver-gilt rivet, which itself resembles the eye of a daisy. An illustration of a daisy depicted in a similar way can be seen …

Silver-gilt mount, basically triangular form with two leaf-shaped elements along one edge meeting at a point; pierced design with two openings, the larger one apparently for attachment to another to form a clasp. Ridged bar below. On the back two studs for attachment to textile or leather. The form of this mount or fitting suggests it may have been part of a clasp of which one piece is now missing. If this interpretation is correct it might be part of a bookbinding clasp or dress fitting, but its function remains uncertain. There is very little to go on in terms of dating but it …
