A copper alloy clasp piece from a hook and eye fastener dating from the post medieval period. The plate is oval with an acorn shaped terminal knop. There are four broken sewing holes round the edge and a rectangular loop at the end. The front of the plate is decorated with white and light blue enamel and a central metal fleur dr lis or acorn. The fastener is similar to other hook and eye clasps from the Early post medieval period, but the use of blue and white enamel is unusual and probably suggests a late 16th or 17th century date. The fastener is 37.16mm long, 22.2mm wide and 1.3mm …

A copper alloy probable dress fastener in the form of a wire pin fashioned in a D shape with the terminal projecting at the bottom of the loop. The terminal is in the form of a thin acorn and is semicircular in section. The rest of the object is circular in section, made of thick wire. The opposite end tapers to a sharp point. This object was probably used as a dress fastener similar to a cloak fastener or hooked tag. The acorn motif suggests a Medieval date, but no parallel has been found. The D shape appears to be intentional rather than as a result of damage. The object has a patch…

Probably a hasp section of a cast copper alloy, hasp and clasp type dress fastener, probably c. 1600-1750. It is the "eye" half of a hook and eye. The fastener is of openwork design, the main body being in the shape of a heart. Below the bottom of the heart is a short, rectangular crossbar above a lozenge shaped projection that is pierced with a circular hole probably for attaching to a garment. Above the heart is a lozenge shaped perforation, flanked by two small lobes with circular fastening holes and above this a rectangular loop to accept the clasp section. There is a trilobed pro…

A cast, copper alloy toggle dating from the post-Medieval period, 1600-1800 AD. It consists of a rounded body in the shape of a pointed oval, from one side of which extends a short, circular shaft ending in a pair of rings positioned side by side. The toggle has a patchy, dark green patina. It is 26.9mm long, 22.7mm wide and 8.2mm thick. It weighs 8.68gm. There are many examples on the PAS Database; DENO-D53724 lists many others. The patchy patina of this example would seem to support it being a toggle to fasten clothing.

An early post-medieval, cast copper alloy dress fastener, the hook for a hook and eye catch, dating from AD1600-1700. It is sub-oval in plan with a rectangular projection at one end, separated from the remainder of the fastener by a shallow groove: this would have been bent over to form a blunt fastening hook. A copper alloy incomplete dress fastener; part of a seventeenth century hook and eye clasp. The operational part of the piece is missing so it is not clear whether it is the hook or the catch piece. The fastener is a plate of metal which is currently oval, but which may originally have been more trefoil shaped. There is a broken sewing loop at one end, and the other end of the plate is damaged, so the hook or catch, and the other two sewing loops are missing. The reverse is plain and the whole plate is bent. The front is decorated with a swirling fleur like design which is typical of t…
