An incomplete cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The majority of the artefact survives, including the main, shallowly convex, oval plate. At one narrow end a wide hook emerges (W.: 5.9mm), curving upwards slightly before a break. At the other end there is a small projecting circular loop. There are two further circular loops on each side of the oval, just above the hook. The small holes may have been used for sewing the object to an item of dress (Geake 2001, 42). On the upper surface of the plate there are raised curvilinear ridges whi…

A copper alloy incomplete dress fastener; part of a seventeenth century hook and eye clasp. The operational part of the piece is missing so it is not clear whether it is the hook or the catch piece. The fastener is a plate of metal which is currently oval, but which may originally have been more trefoil shaped. There is a broken sewing loop at one end, and the other end of the plate is damaged, so the hook or catch, and the other two sewing loops are missing. The reverse is plain and the whole plate is bent. The front is decorated with a swirling fleur like design which is typical of t…

Incomplete sheet copper alloy clasp fastener, pressed with a pattern of foliage. The eye for the hook is broken and open and the side attachments are also incomplete, but the two loops, one on each side of the eye, are still intact. These loops would have allowed the fastener to be stitched onto the item of clothing. Bailey (2004) illustrates a very similar example with the same pattern of foliage on page 100, Fig.2.43, which is dated to the 17th century.

One half of a copper-alloy hasp and clasp fastener of suggested 17th century AD date (G. Bailey; 2004; pp. 100). No exact parallel could be found for this piece, which represents the plate into which the hooked half of the device would have fitted. The plate takes the form of an elongated scallop shell, with a series of moulded ridges in its upper surface. A sub-rectangular frame extends from the top of the object and either side of this is a perforated lug. A third perforated lug extends from the centre point of the bottom edge. These three holes would have served as a means of attac…
