This is a puzzling piece which has some similarity with 16th century dress fittings, but does not correspond precisely with examples so far recorded in that it is very thin and lightweight. It has a heart‑shaped stamp on the back which may possibly be a maker's mark, but is not one that we have been able to identify. It also has some affinity with traditional ornaments from Continental Europe.

Cast copper alloy dress hook fastener with openwork decoration consisting of three fleurets surrounding central six-pointed star, encompassed by a twisted, rope-like border. Within this border are two knops, one at each end of the rectangular fastening loop above, where it meets the border. The aperture would have been used to attach the dress hook to a loop of fabric, looped around the bar, or the bar could have been directly sewn onto the material. Bailey (2004) illustrates similar examples on page 95, Figs.12.9 & 12.10, which are dated from the 16th to the 17th century.
