This is a puzzling piece which has some similarity with 16th century dress fittings, but does not correspond precisely with examples so far recorded in that it is very thin and lightweight. It has a heart‑shaped stamp on the back which may possibly be a maker's mark, but is not one that we have been able to identify. It also has some affinity with traditional ornaments from Continental Europe.

Description: Incomplete silver-gilt dress fastener or dress hook. The plate of the dress fastener is trifoliate in plan with a circular protruding boss in the centre of each lobe. Each boss is encircled by rope-like filigree decoration and projecting knops. Originally at the centre of the fastener, between the three bosses, would have been another element; probably a form of flower head projection which has since been lost. Possible silver moulded dress fastener dating from the 18th century. The object comprises a leaf-shaped, moulded body with loops for attachment and a hook. There is one loop at the apex and one to either side of the hook. The body of the fastener is decorated with a line of pellets at the centre with radiating lines on either side.

Silver gilt eye plate from clothing. Triangular plate with trefoil at each corner and a circular loop in the centre of each edge, one of which is larger than the others. There is a central boss, hollow on the reverse, decorated with a central pellet, three filigree circles and surrounded by a circle of filigree. There is a further filigree circle in each corner of the plate, and the edge of the plate is bordered with twisted wire. One of the edge loops is broken and the plate is bent and cracked. Similar to dress hooks in Gaimster et al (2002). 16th century. Measuring 20 x 18.5mm. 1.1g.

A 16th century silver gilt-dress accessory with three recurving hooks with tapering points, and a fourth hook at the top, which recurves to the front of the item to form a loop, perhaps to act as a suspension loop. The body of the item is circular with seven knops around the circumference. Attached to the centre is a sheet silver disc, cut to resemble petals which are reminiscent of a daisy (S. A stamped maker's mark on reverse resembles a narrow (tanner's) hide in an oval field.
