A cast copper-alloy hooked tag of probable post medieval date (1500-1700). The plate of the hooked tag is broadly oval in plan with a series of projecting knops (some of which have been pierced) positioned evenly around the central plate. An integral rectangular projection extends from one end: this has been bent to form a loop / hook which folds back upon itself. The hook tag measures 44.7mm in length, 21.6mm in width, is a maximum of 5.4mm thick (body plate is 2.5mm thick) and weighs 8.14 grams. The plate of the hooked tag has a central possibly floral decoration formed from a serie…

An incomplete copper alloy hasp and clasp fastener of Post-Medieval date. The plate is flat and oval in shape. At the exterior edge it has a raised collar followed by the remains of an integral loop that would have allowed for attachment to a corresponding hooked plate. There are three projecting trefoil knops positioned at the inner edge and the top and bottom edges, and which have circular perforations. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with an incised floral motif the comprises a central flower with circular petals pendant from branches to left and right. The central motif…

Post Medieval (17th century) cast copper alloy dress fastener. The plate is sub-oval with one straight edge. This edge would have had an integrally cast rectangular loop. The plate has three projecting knops, two of which are incomplete. The complete knop is circular, with an incomplete piercing for attachment; the remains of the other knops clearly had complete perforations. The upper surface of the plate is worn and corroded, with part of an incised floral design with surrounding circular and semi circular rings extant. The reverse is plain and undecorated. It is 29.53mm long, 24.22…

A copper alloy fastener or toggle of Post-Medieval date. It is 24.21mm in length, 19.09mm in width and 7.5mm thick. It weighs 7.61gm. It consists of a rounded body in the shape of a pointed oval, from the centre at one side of which extends a short, oval shaft which terminates with a pair of flat loops, positioned side by side. The pestle has a smooth, dark green patina. Examples on the PAS Database include SWYOR E137B1, and DENO-D53724 lists many others. There is some debate as to whether all these objects are cosmetic pestles of Iron Age/Roman date, although the quality of the metal…

A complete silver gilt dress hook with a cast plate and an applied wire loop. The plate is triangular; the front face has an applied filigree border. In the centre is a raised boss decorated with a filigree trefoil and a central silver knop, there are three knops around, one in each corner of the plate. At each angle of the plate there is a trefoil delimited with filigree and each trefoil has a central knop. The reverse has been filed and a silver loop applied formed to make two small loops for sewing the fitting to cloth and a larger loop, presumably to act as a catch for a hook. Dim…

Tiny silver catch-piece from a dress fastener. The plate is in the form of a shell, nicely modelled in three dimensions, and at the narrow apex of the shell is a transversely set oval loop. Around the loop there is engraved decoration which may represent stylised foliage. In both of the angles between the shell and the loop is a small circular sewing loop.

Catch-piece from a dress fastener made of a silvery metal, probably a lead/tin alloy with a high proportion of tin. The plate is oval, and decorated with three concentric ridges around the edge; the central ridge is beaded. Within the ridges is a complicated and apparently asymmetric relief scrolly ?foliage design. Each of the long sides has a small decorative projecting lug; one of the short sides has a much larger trefoil lug with two pellets and a perforation. The other short side has a rectangular loop in which to engage the matching hook, with a small circular perforated lug on e…

Hooked fastener, probably from clothing, consisting of a long plate with an iron rivet at one end and a broad hook at the other. The plate has relief decoration; the rivet end is rounded and decorated with a relief double rose, with the rivet in the centre. Below this is an asymmetric panel with hard-to-read decoration; the outline of the plate itself is asymmetric, but it does not appear to be broken. Just above the hook is a small panel of relief plant ornament. The hook has lost its tip.

Oval dress-fastener made from copper alloy. It has five D-shaped pierced sewing lugs, two along each long edge and one at one short end. At the other short end is a broken-off hook 8 mm wide which appears to have curved up and out, rather than down and under as they usually do. The plate is decorated with engraved lines and parts of circles, forming a ?plant motif. The surface is corroded but it may originally have had a white-metal coating.

Possible dress fastener made from copper-alloy wire wound into a knot. One end of the wire is tapered and forms a long projection with a right-angled corner, perhaps once a hook or loop. The other end is formed into a circle and then the end is interlaced around and through this loop. Perhaps early post-medieval.
