Description: A complete Read Class B Type 2 post-medieval silver-gilt eye-plate dress fastener dating to c. AD 1500-1600. The fastener consists of a circular plate of silver sheet decorated on the front with a central pellet within a circular filigree boarder, surrounded by a further seven filigree circles. A filigree border surrounds the central design. A single length of silver wire is soldered to the reverse, shaped to form two attachment loops and an eye. The gilding is worn but still visible in patches, especially on the filigree.

This consists of a double wire border with four circles arranged in a quatrefoil in the middle. To the reverse is the remains of the hook which has broken off.

It appears to have been cast in one piece, in moulded relief.The item is sub-triangular in shape and is of a trifoliate openwork design. Below the sprouting elements is a large open loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. Silver gilt post-medieval clothes fastener (eye clasp).
The item is circular and partially damaged. There are two integral attachment loops and there would have been a third, though this is now missing. The larger of the two loops may have acted as the eyelet portion of the fastener, rather than as an attachment loop per se.
The circular face of the clasp features raised moulded relief in the form of a human face. The reverse is flat and undecorated and bears a maker's mark, part of which is lost. The remaining mark reads 'T'.

A silver-gilt clothing fastener. The fastener has triangular body, rectangular in section, with a rounded loop extending from each side, 'D' shaped in section (flat back and rounded front). The front of the body bears a moulded design set within a recessed triangular panel. The centre of the panel has a raised collett holding a stone, possibly deep red in colour. Around the collett are six rounded impressions forming a flower design. A circular impression is located in each of the three corners. The back of the fastener is flat and undecorated but with remaining traces of the gilding.

The tag is formed of a triangular plate with heart-shaped openwork centre and a crescentric shoulder at either side. A projecting 'T' shpaed bar is missing to an old break on the flat edge of the triangular plate.

Post Medieval cast copper alloy dress fitting; this is the 'hook' element of a two piece hook and eye clasp. The main body is oval with a central cast design which is worn - it is possibly of a flower within a beaded border. There is a semi-circular knop half way along one of the long edges, and a worn break on the opposing side. There is a damaged and incomplete loop at one point of the oval, and two loops on the opposing end, flanking the rectangular hook element. The reverse is plain and undecorated. It is 38.78mm long, 21.92mm wide, 2.28mm thick and weighs 6.19 grams.

Silver-gilt cast dress fitting in the form of a cherub's head with flanking wings. There are three integral loops around the face. The first is a larger loop and located below the cherubs chin. On either side of this loop, below the wings are flanking knops. The other two smaller loops are on either side of the top of the head. In between these is another knop. The reverse is flat and chased.

There is then an openwork triangle comprised of three openwork circles with two openwork circles below, with a projecting arm extending from the apex of the triangle. Post Medieval (1500-1700) cast copper alloy Type E Class 3 hooked-clasp, c.f. Read p140 no 402.
The main body is sub-circular with a central lozenge panel with four openwork circles projecting out of the upper two edges. An integrally cast rectangular attachment loop is located at the apex of the fitting with a projecting hook extending from the opposite side. The hook is rectangular in plan, and bends back on itself towards the reverse of the fitting.

Discussion: A functional gilt dress fitting, forming the eye section of a hook and eye. Probably 16th Century.

Post Medieval cast copper alloy dress fitting. The Main body of the fitting is triangular in plan, with sub-triangular knops at each of the corners. The knops have circular perforations for attachment. The shorter edge of the fitting has a rectangular attachment loop. The upper surface is decorated with incised lines and punches arranged in a foliate design. The reverse is plain and undecorated. The fitting is 38.62mm long, 26.66mm wide, 2.22mm thick and weighs 3.61 grams. It is dark red-brown in colour, with patches of green copper corrosion.

Fragment of copper alloy post-medieval dress fastener. What remains is the main body and loop of the fastener but no indications of a hook or loop below. The body is formed from an openwork plate, flat in section, that has two opposing divergent kidney-shaped piercings. The outer edge of the plate is shaped to follow the indent of the kidney shapes.
