The shield-shaped plate (corner missing) is decorated with a V-shaped notch between two concave cut-outs at the top (opposite the hook) and with an elaborate stamped rose. There are copper alloy rivets in the centre near the top and one at the base securing the remains of the short separate hooked back-plate. The hook curls forward and over to touch the front of the plate. 22 x 35mm. 17th-century dress fasteners, made in a variety of shapes, were used in pairs, one hooked and one with an eye (cf. Read 1995 nos.768-772).
