Two elements are attached to the underside probably with solder: a strip, with a pointed or angled end and once probably hooked, at the centre of the straight edge and projecting beyond it; a wire loop shallowly embedded near the rounded edge (one end now dislodged). Post Medieval double-hooked dress fastener, part of one integral hook missing. The plate with elaborately shaped sides and edges is decorated in counter-relief with scrolls and foliar motifs around a frame enclosing an inscription, MARIA, probably a reference to the Virgin. Plate 45.5 x 25.5mm. Overall length estimated at 66mm. Thickness 1.8mm. This is much more elaborate than fasteners found in Norwich (Norwich Households fig.9), and more akin to an example from Amsterdam (Baart et al. 1977 cat. no.160. 16th century

Post medieval ovoid white-metal coated looped dress fastener with three lobes pierced for attachment and a small bifid lobe mid way along both long edges. Cast counter-relief decoration on the front face consists of the arms of the Commonwealth within a wreath, to be viewed with the loop to the left. 37 x 22mm. For use with a blunt-hooked counterpart (Read 1995 nos. 768-9 and 771-2). Loop 7.5 x 3.5mm internally. 1649-1660. See Robinson (1999, 286; fig. 1), especially no. 5

Post Medieval blunt-hooked dress fastener. The shield-shaped plate (corner missing) is decorated with a V-shaped notch between two concave cut-outs at the top (opposite the hook) and with an elaborate stamped rose. There are copper alloy rivets in the centre near the top and one at the base securing the remains of the short separate hooked back-plate. The hook curls forward and over to touch the front of the plate. 22 x 35mm. 17th-century dress fasteners, made in a variety of shapes, were used in pairs, one hooked and one with an eye (cf. Read 1995 nos.768-772).

Post Medieval tinned dress fastener, pear-shaped plate decorated with large and small stamped annulets forming flower on a field of lozengiform grid of tiny dots, three knopped projecting attachment-loops around outer edge, broken flat-sectioned hook at base. 29 x 41mm. Incomplete Post Medieval silvered dress fastener, trefoil-shaped back-plate, remains of outer edges of three hollow domed bosses with fillets in the interstices, within remains of a twisted wire border, flattened terminal of separate circular-sectioned hook and rectangular loop soldered onto reverse. 20 x 21mm. Cheap version of form of object more commonly found in silver, Cf. Gaimster, Hayward, Mitchell and Parker Antiq. Journal (2002). 16th century.

Post Medieval looped or "eye" part of a blunt-hooked dress fastener with three pierced attachment lobes, two next to the incomplete loop and one at the other end between a pair of scrolled lobes. At mid-point of both sides a bifid lobe. On the front face are the arms of the Commonwealth within a wreathed frame. These are to be viewed with the "eye" to the left. 37 x 2mm.
