An incomplete copper alloy post-medieval dress fastener, c. 16th century AD (1500 - 1650 AD) . The fastener is the 'female' tag from pair of hooked tags; it has a sub-oval plate and would have had a large rectangular loop at one end, this has broken away. Either side of the plate would be two rounded attachment knops, the left is missing but the right remains. There is a third debased trefoil attachment knop at the base of the clasp. The eye section of the clasp is convex, with moulded relief, consisting of a hollow-dome bearing a wreathed iri…

An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy openwork dress clasp, broken at the diagnostic end but an eye piece, based on similar examples (c. 17th century).
The dress fastener comprises a circular moulded openwork plate with seven pellets at the centre, forming a sexfoil flower. This is surrounded by a band of eight circular perforations, three of which have worn through. This is in turn surrounded by a moulded border of alternating pellets and transverse bands. There are three rounded attachment knops positioned around the circumference. A rectangular hook projects from …

An almost complete copper-alloy post-medieval dress fastener, c. 17th century AD.
It comprises an oval plate which is squared at one end where it narrows into a sub-rectangular attachment loop (eye), separated by a low collar. The plate is flanked by two attachment loops, one on either side, but one side has been broken through. At the apex of the plate is a third attachment loop. All the attachment loops that are present have a central circular hole and a small knop at the apex. The plate is plain apart from two parallel incised lines on the collar. This side…

A post-medieval copper alloy hooked clasp, dating to c. AD 1645-1660. This is one section of a two part hooked clasp and features the hook itself. The object has a central circular plate, very slightly convex with a hollow reverse. There are three small sewing loops, two on either side of the hook and the third directly opposite the hook. This latter loop has a knop on the outer edge. The front of the plate is cast in low relief with a depiction of a shield containing the cross of St George in a wreath (part of the Commonwealth arms).

An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy dress clasp, broken at the diagnostic end but an eye piece, based on similar examples (c. 17th century).
The fitting is flat backed and has a moulded front. The central plate is oval, and is broken at one narrow end; the other narrow end terminates in a fleur-de-lis shaped, the central part of which is perforated as an attachment loop. At the centre of each of the longer sides are protruding conjoined knops. Within a border the device on the front is probably a fleur-de-lis (see below) that fills the field.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy dress fastener (c. 16th-17th century). The object consisted of a circular plate with moulded decoration based around a central rose. The hook and loops have broken off, all breaks being worn. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The plate has a raised rim, with two loops formerly at the 11 and 1 o'clock position respectively. The start of the rectangular loop survives on the top of the tag. Around the five-petalled rose the outer field is decorated with bifurcating scrolls. The plate has been bent in profile as a result of old dam…

A post medieval copper alloy dress fastener, probably a cufflink or less likely a toggle, dating to c. AD 1750-1900.
The object is formed of a round circular stud, which rises into a thick cylindrical stalk, upon which is placed a flattened drop-shaped plate. This plate is faceted on its upper surface, giving the appearance of a central spine. It is a dark brown patina, not the green one would associate with Roman finds from this area. This patina, combined with its streamlined and distinct apperance, suggests its date as post medieval, as most likely a small cufflink akin to SW…

An incomplete copper alloy dress fastener of the post medieval period, c. AD 1550-1700.
Only the plate and loop survive, the pin and hook are missing. The plate is triangular in shape, with a pinked border, and the flattened loop has now pressed backwards through the plate, creating rectangular apertures. The same post depositional phenomenon is probably responsible for the further rectangular aperture at the base, where the hook would have been attached. A further small aperture may be from a further plate with a decorative design, as in DEV-8DB122. There is gilding surviving o…

A complete copper alloy dress fastener, dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1500-1650.
The object consists of a rectangular sewing loop, which has slightly bevelled edges. this is attached to an openwork decorative plate with central moulded decoration. There are four apertures on either side of the central moulded design, one of which is now infilled with sediment. The moulded design is a central rounded object composed of at least seven raised circles, which Read identifies as a pinecone or pineapple motif (Read 2008: 104). This is placed atop a downward pointing triangl…

An incomplete gilded copper alloy dress hook dating to the early post medieval period, c. AD 1500-1560.
The terminal of the hook is broken, but the main body of the fastener and the attachment loop survive in good condition, with gilding surviving on the upper surface in protected areas. The object is triangular in shape, although the three angles of the triangle are rounded. It is decorated with a floral motif, with a central circle with a smaller cog-like circle with rectilinear knops and a central pellet at its heart, possibly imitating the central stamens of a flower. This is…
