A copper-alloy object of probable late Iron Age to Roman date. It is currently unclear exactly what this artefact was used for, but there is a possibility that it is either a dress fastener or a terret ring. The article consists of a semi-circular loop. At a right angle to the loop, at its flat sided rear there is a projection with a T shaped gap in the rear, presumably for attachment. The top of this projection is also semi-circular and has faint remains of incised decoration. There is also a circular indentation in the centre of the projection. No parallels for this object have yet b…

A worn, but complete cast copper-alloy toggle of post-medieval date. The object has a circular cross-section but is pointed oval shape in plan. Cast integrally there is a flat-sectioned arm coming from the side of the toggle which terminates in two small circular loops (set together like a figure of eight). The metal is reddish in colour with a dusting of light green corrosion product. This object is one of a group of artefacts which were originally identified by Ralph Jackson and Sally Worrell as cosmetic pestles, dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman period, AD 100 - 200…

A cast copper-alloy blunt-hooked dress fastener with inlaid black and white enamel. The object is leaf-shaped or drop-shaped, with a bent-over hook at the wider end. The leaf-shaped area is formed from a flat plate of copper alloy, with a raised rim and three projecting attachment holes, one at the pointed tip and a pair at the widest point. All are now broken. The upper surface has raised scrolly decoration, perhaps floral, providing fields for enamel; one field, at the base of the hook, is now empty and may have lost its enamel. The wide blunt hook has been cast integrally to the …

A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy hooked tag or hasp and clasp fastener of suggested 17th century AD date. An illustration in Bailey's book "Buttons and fasteners" (2004; pp. 100) shows how this fastener is thought to have been used in conjunction with a second plate in order to fasten a garment. The object consists of a lozenge-shaped plate with a projecting loop or sewing hole (only one intact) on the top and each of the side points. At the bottom, a moulded band with a border of triangles in relief separates the lozenge-shaped plate from the hook section. The point of the hook …

Cast copper alloy dress fastener or clasp decorated with plumes and scrolls surrounding a bearded face, which appears to have a hood and a collar, below which is a scallop shell motif. The fastener or clasp would have attached to a similar piece in the form of an eye, with an aperture at one end. The four openwork holes, two on either side of the scallop shell, and two at the end of the plumes, would have allowed the fastener to have been sewn onto a garment. Bailey (1992) illustrates a similar example in style on page 32, No.28, which is dated from the 16th to the 17th century. …

The attachment loop at the top of the fitting is rectangular, typical of dress fittings of this date. Otherwise the rest of the fitting is entirely missing. An incomplete cast copper alloy hooked fastener of probable 17th century date. The dress fastener comprises a sub-circular plate with one round attachment loop intact, the stub of a second and the third entirely missing.
