The dress hook has a circular central element with a flat rectangular tab, which would have been the hook, extending from end. The opposing end of the fastening has a worn cinquefoil knop with an off-centre perforation. There are two further perforations towards the hook. These holes would have enable the fastening to be sewn to a garment to secure it in place. The opposing fastening would have had an eyelet into which the hook would have fitted. Copper alloy dress fastener dating from the earlier post-medieval period, c. 16th century. The object was made from copper alloy or, possibly, a lead or tin-alloy (judging by the current colour) but is very worn and not in a good condition. All surfaces are rough to the touch. Originally it was flat oval in shape, but only half of it remains. There is no suspension loop suggesting that this might be the lower half of the item. It was oval, with moulded flowers within an oval frame on the obverse and decorative floral mouldings on the apices. Read Class A, type 8.
