See Read early post medieval, Class A, Type 1: Circular.
The fastener consists of a roughly circular plate with two complete circular loops projecting from the top and a third incomplete loop at the bottom. Between the two upper loops is an incomplete rectangular loop. The face is decorated with a moulded design of a multi-petalled flower formed from three concentric segmented circles with a single pellet in the centre. The reverse is undecorated. The object's surface has a smooth dark green patina.

The date and function of objects of this form are debated, it being either a Late Iron Age or Roman cosmetic pestle, or a Post Medieval clothing fastener toggle.
It consists of a rounded body in the shape of a pointed oval, circular in section, from one side of which extends a short, sub-rectangular sectioned shaft ending in a pair of rings positioned side by side. The fastener has a patchy green patina. It is 24.4mm long, 16.9mm wide and 6.6mm thick. It weighs 7.0g.
This object is one of a group of artefacts which were originally identified by Ralph Jackson and Sally Worrell as cosmetic pestles, dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman period, AD 100 - 200. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that at least some of these items are in fact clothing fasteners; toggles similar to those on a duffel coat. One piece of evidence is the distribution of PAS examples, which differ from the distribution of cosmetic sets. See the discussion on page 6 of Jackson (2010) Cosmetic Sets of Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, and compare number 513 and 593.
The date of these toggles is still unknown as none have been found in dated contexts. Following SF-332DF0, this example is suggested to be Post Medieval, about AD 1600 - 1800.

Read 2008 early medieval Class M. The object is composed a central, solid, cylindrical body with a large circular hole through the transverse axis. The cylinder tapers slightly towards the hook ends. The surface is decorated with deeply incised rectangular cross hatching. At each end of the cylinder projects a short length of an integral drawn wire hook. The hooks are sub-circular in cross section.
Length: 42.22mm, Width: 8.93mm, Thickness: 1.17mm, Weight: 11.0g
The metal is mid green in colour with a predominantly smooth patina.
Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: DOR-C3029D, NMS-EE54B7 and WAW-3E6E44.
The double-hooked fastener is a type of dress fastener which would have supported a chain through the perforation. Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households; Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-78 East Anglian Archaeology Report) illustrates a similar fastener, No. 79 which was found in a 11th to 12th century context, however it may be of an earlier date, the Middle Saxon period.
LANCUM-A79DB1 notes: Sometimes identified as shroud hooks, such objects might also have been used as harbicks (havettes or shear-board hooks, implements to fix cloth during the sharing of the nap). See discussion in Hinton Hamwic 1996, 47-8. Examples from Norfolk include those from Cantley (Norfolk Historic Environment Record number 51311), Norwich (Norwich Households no. 79) and Roudham (PAS SF-E1B756).

The dress fastener comprises a circular moulded openwork plate with seven pellets at the centre, forming a sexfoil flower. This is surrounded by a band of eight circular perforations, three of which have worn through. This is in turn surrounded by a moulded border of alternating pellets and transverse bands. There are three rounded attachment knops positioned around the circumference. A rectangular hook projects from the bottom of the plate and terminates in an old break.

A round toggle (diameter: 7.07mm) projects at a 90 degree angle from a stem extending from the right-hand side of the artefact, with a pointed terminus on the opposing distal end. A right-facing male bust in profile relief sits centrally surrounded by a curving tendril design with light blue enamel filling the cavities. Four attachment holes, two near the left distal end and two broken holes near the centre-right distal end, would have attached the clasp to the garment. The back is plain with a slight central concavity corresponding to the central bust.
Dimensions: Length: 48.94 mm; Width: 23.25 mm; Thickness: 3.35 mm; Weight: 8.06 g.
This fastener is unusual, and no exact parallels have been identified. However, Read (2008, p178: No. 678) illustrates the eye section of a fastener of similar form (also with a human head) dating to the early post medieval period and classified as a 'Class A, Type 9' . Related eye section fasteners with floriate enamel decoration (ibid, p172:nos.647-8) are similarly dated. While fasteners with the round toggle fitting are not illustrated by Read (2008), a fastener with a very different body section but with the round toggle is recorded on the PAS database (YORYM-5CC225) and again dates c.AD1500-1650.

It has a narrow incomplete loop at one end, with two small circular sewing holes for attachment behind it. The perimeter of the plate is engrailed or scalloped with ornate scroll work, and there is an oval knop at the apex. This does not appear to be broken, so it is probably not a dress hook with a broken hook. The centre of the plate has a central rib, with three openings on each side of it. Length 29.3mm; width 18.0mm; thickness 1.7mm and weight 3.48g.
This fastener does not appear to fit into any Read (1998) Class, though it is broadly like his early Post Medieval blunt-hooked and eye clasps, Class A, type 14. 15 and 16 (page 182). If the fastener did have a missing hook, it is similar to early Post medieval Class H, type 3 (page 121).3636150017004SWYOR2021-11-02T00:00:00Z2021-11-02T00:00:00Zeye piecePAS 38862023-01-30T10:43:19Z2023-04-05T11:06:59Z3.48PAS63D79F470016F71.71829.317121141430220282104921055North YorkshireSelbyCawoodSE603753.82581403-1.08996073bands.shops.handy10SWYOR-79FA08Copper alloy10627CastIncompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderSWYOR79F477PostMedievalHookedTagcopy.jpg1213793images/ikw1945/Yorkshire and the HumberCertain12023-04-05T10:06:59.475Zfinds-10964151096415SOM-407FF5DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)POST MEDIEVALAn incomplete copper alloy dress fastener, c. 17th century AD.
