This is a puzzling piece which has some similarity with 16th century dress fittings, but does not correspond precisely with examples so far recorded in that it is very thin and lightweight. It has a heart‑shaped stamp on the back which may possibly be a maker's mark, but is not one that we have been able to identify. It also has some affinity with traditional ornaments from Continental Europe.

A complete cast copper alloy double sharp-hooked clasp (dress hook) of early Medieval date (c. 8th to early 8th century AD). The object consists of a central bar and two curved hooks. The central bar is sub-rectangular in plan and profile measuring 22.5mm long, 7.8mm wide and 4mm thick. The bar is neatly perforated in the centre (3.4mm internal diameter) which may have been used for a suspension chain or cord. Transverse incised lines frame the perforation on both sides. The bar is decorated with diagonal incised lines on both sides and both edges. The bar gently tapers towards incurv…

Treasure case 2021 T800
Description:
An incomplete silver-gilt dress fastener dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1600).
The fitting is triangular in plan and is bordered with applied twisted wire (filigree) against a folded border. There is a loop attached to the top central edge with decorative knobs on either side. A post medieval copper alloy dress fastener, probably a cufflink or less likely a toggle, dating to c. AD 1750-1900.
The object is formed of a round circular stud, which rises into a thick cylindrical stalk, upon which is placed a flattened drop-shaped plate. This plate is faceted on its upper surface, giving the appearance of a central spine. It is a dark brown patina, not the green one would associate with Roman finds from this area. This patina, combined with its streamlined and distinct apperance, suggests its date as post medieval, as most likely a small cufflink akin to SW…
