Incomplete Post Medieval silvered dress fastener, trefoil-shaped back-plate, remains of outer edges of three hollow domed bosses with fillets in the interstices, within remains of a twisted wire border, flattened terminal of separate circular-sectioned hook and rectangular loop soldered onto reverse. 20 x 21mm. Cheap version of form of object more commonly found in silver, Cf. Gaimster, Hayward, Mitchell and Parker Antiq. Journal (2002). 16th century.

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy hook-section of a two-piece clasp (1550-1650 AD). The fitting is flat backed and has a moulded front. The central plate is oval in plan with three attachment-knops and two ornamental knops. Within the oval plate is a raised oval panel bearing a foliate design. The raised oval panel is contained within a beaded border. At one edge of the plate is a projecting blunt hook. Incomplete early Post Medieval cast copper alloy eye-section of a hooked clasp (1500-1700 AD). The fitting is in the shape of the Prince of Wales feathers: the heraldic device consisting of three white feathers emerging from a golden coronet. The mount is symmetrical in design. It has a large central feather with a smaller feather on each side. These feathers abut a gently curving band which signifies the coronet. An cast copper alloy Post Medieval dress fastening. This component of a dress fastening is the ‘eye’ and not the ‘hook’. The body of the dress fastening is a moulded sub-lozenge in plan with a rectangular loop along the upper edge. At the lower tip and at either side there are is an integral lug with circular perforations. The upper surface is decorated with scrolled leaves and pellets forming a floral design. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The surface of the dress fastening is abraded. The dress hook measures 38.49mm long and 25.22mm wide across the body. It weighs 5.2g.…

A cast copper alloy clothes fastener dating to the 17th century AD. The plate is oval in shape and is decorated with a punched ring and floral motif within a punched ring border. At one end is a small circular attachment loop, with a rounded knop, similar knopped loops can be seen on either side. These eyes would have allowed the fitting to be sewn onto a garment. At the opposite end there is a rectangular loop, through which a ribbon wpuld have been passed. The reverse is undecorated. The object is worn with a mid reddish-brown patina.

The plate has three projecting sub-triangular knobs, which are pierced for attachment. An incomplete cast copper alloy dress-hook or hooked tag. The object consists of a circular plate with openwork, moulded decoration, with a rose in the centre. The hook and loop have broken off, all breaks are worn. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The plate has a raised rim, with two loops at the 11 and 1 O' clock position respectively. the rectangular loop survives on the top of the tag. The surface is light silvery-grey colour. This artefact is late medieval to early post-medieval in date.

There is a circular loop on either edge of the rectangular loop and one at the opposite end to the loop. Six decorative knops also visible. The plate itself has a decoratively moulded design within a moulded curvilinear and floral decoration. The surface is mid reddish-brown in colour. The reverse is undecorated. This fitting probably dates to the 17th - 18th century.

A cast copper-alloy hooked tag of probable post medieval date (1500-1700). The plate of the hooked tag is broadly oval in plan with a series of projecting knops (some of which have been pierced) positioned evenly around the central plate. An integral rectangular projection extends from one end: this has been bent to form a loop / hook which folds back upon itself. Incomplete stamped copper alloy clothes fastener with three trefoil knops, one on each side of the fastener, and the third, now incomplete, at the opposite end to the edge of the attachment loop. The rest of the loop, or eyelet, with its rectangular aperture, is missing. The upper face is decorated with a central stem and flower head, with foliage either side, in the form of a serrated leaves, within a border of annulets. This is the eyelet half of a hook-and-eyelet dress fastener. Bailey (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 100, Fig.2.42, which is dated to the 17th century.

Decoration consists of a central four petaled flower surrounded by a swirling pattern. This clothing fastener would have formed one part of a pair, the other side having a clasp to fit round the bar of the hasp, thus fastening the clothing to which it was attached. Length: 37.80mm; width: 17.74mm; thickness; 1.80mm; weight: 5.75g.
