An incomplete copper-alloy Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gusset plate. It is sub-triangular with a slightly convex decorated chip carved front face. The decoration has a central broad edged triangle with incurving sides that then extend up to form a central ridge. Either side there is an outward facing bird; their heads in the top corners curving beaks, pellet eyes and with curving clawed feet along the sides. The fastener is preserved intact, though the hook on the rear face of the object is partially broken and distorted in old damage. In plan it takes the form of a fleur de lis, with a rectangular aperture in its projecting front edge, behind which are two circular attachment holes. Date: c. 1600-1700 AD. Description: A complete silver post-medieval hooked dress fastener. It is circular in shape with twisted silver wire filigree decoration on the outer face. This consists of a double wire border with four ovals arranged in a quatrefoil in the middle with a raised pellet in their centre. A complete copper alloy post-medieval dress hook. It has a circular openwork body consisting of a central heart shape surrounding by a circle and then a row of conjoined ovals. Extending from the top is a rectangular attachment loop and from the bottom a rear-facing pointed hoop. It survives in fair condition, but the hook is bent out of shape. A break and traces of iron corrosion product at the opposite end suggests that an iron hook was attached here originally. There is a small, circular attachment hole at each end. It is slightly bent out of shape. Read (2008, 217, no.779) illustrates a similar example from Suffolk recorded with the PAS (SF-D0F262) to which he attributes a broad c.13th to 15th dtae.
