The other half has decoration of two high-relief C-shaped scrolls with their backs towards the flat half and their points upwards The point of one scroll has been lost, but the surviving scroll is open at the top, and appears to be in the shape of a flat ribbon which is wound up at either end, and the inner end bound to the inner end of the other scroll. Between the two scrolls, and partly within both halves, is a sub-oval o…

The plate is sub-oval (slightly wider at the eye end) and shallowly convex on the front, concave on the reverse. There are three projecting circular attachment loops, one at the narrow end and two opposing each other at the wide end. Incomplete post medieval copper-alloy dress fastener. An eye-piece of a blunt-hooked clasp of Read’s (2008) Class A, Type 2 and similar to ibid No. 643. It is a flat sub-oval plate with a rectangular loop or eye at one end. At the opposite end and at the centre of each long edge there is a projecting circular attachment loop, although one of these latter is incomplete due to a worn break. The two complete ones have a very small round knop on their outside edges. There are two small concavities on the internal edge of the outer transverse bar of the eye, probably a result of …

Post-medieval copper alloy clasp of Read 2008 early post-medieval Class G, Type 1 wire quadruple sharp-hooked clasp constructed from three lengths of wire of two gauges, the narrower one tightly wound around the other two, very similar to ibid. nos. 572-3, both from the River Thames foreshore, London. Only two other examples, also from the River Thames, have been recorded on this database (PUBLIC-76F0EB and PUBLIC-1BBE96). They differ from the present piece in being made up of five and four lengths of wire respectively. Such objects were perhaps "associate…

Discoidal mount of copper alloy sheet with a central hole filled with remains of an iron rivet and surrounded by rust on both faces. The front face is engraved with a ring of rocker-arm around the edge and eight lines of the same radiating from the centre. The object is probably part of a Read 2008, early post-medieval double sharp-hooked clasp of Class S, of which two other examples with circular plates have been recorded in Norfolk (NMS-6DA7EF and NMS-AE34D1). However, rivets that secure the front plate to the double hook in this class are normally of copper alloy. For a shield-shap…

Hook-piece from a copper-alloy blunt-hooked fastener of post-medieval date. It has an oval plate with relief decoration of a stylised face set within an oval made up of two swags of drapery. There are possible flowers or plant stems curling to either side. This is all set in a double ridged frame, with a broad groove between the ridges. The design is the right way up when the object is held with the hook to the right; the hook bends slightly backwards and then forwards, and is then broken (slightly worn break); it is 6mm wide at the break. Description: Post-medieval blunt-hooked fastener made from a single piece of silver. The plate is a fleur-de-lis shape, with a large central lozengiform lobe and two much smaller back-to-back C-shaped lobes below. All of the edges of the plate have a filed sharp bevel, the tool marks from which survive. The plate is not quite flat, but is V-shaped in cross-section, with a central longitudinal angle; on the reverse of this is a groove, suggesting that the plate …

Part of a post-medieval sheet copper alloy clasp, a distorted probable dress fastener, semicircular and black coated. On the front face there is at least one circle of punched dots. Two elements are attached to the underside probably with solder: a strip, with a pointed or angled end and once probably hooked, at the centre of the straight edge and projecting beyond it; a wire loop shallowly embedded near the rounded edge (one end now dislodged). No good parallel noted. Length (excluding hook) 22mm. Width 40mm. Width of loop 25mm. Perhaps 16th - 17th century.

Description: Incomplete medieval or early post-medieval silver mount or dress fastener. One edge has a recessed flange terminating in an old break at one end. The rest of the object consists of a moulded design around a central hole or eye, now incomplete due to old breaks. The decoration appears to comprise two opposed S-shaped tendrils, each terminating in a trefoil. Description: A complete silver-gilt eye-plate from a hook-and-eye dress fastener. The central body of the fastener is in the form of an inverted triangle. The body is surrounded by one circular sewing loop on each side of the basal apex, and a larger medial loop at the topposite side where the corresponding hook would have been inserted. The loops thus form a trefoil shape around the central sub-triangular body. The centre of the piece is decorated with what is probably the head of a cherub moulded in relief. The cheeks of the cherub are puffed out, and puffs of air lead from the mout…

Incomplete hook plate, with most of the hook missing, from a post-medieval white-metal coated copper alloy blunt hooked clasp of Read 2008, Class A, Type 16, cf. no. 696 (NMS-84C863). Probably cast in the same mould as that published example and as another Norfolk find (NMS-539A87). The latter is poorly fettled but even on this present piece, however, two apertures nearest to the hook remain almost entirely blocked by metal. Extant length 31mm, width 21.7mm, thickness 1.2mm. 17th century.
