Incomplete post medieval copper-alloy dress fastener. An eye-piece of a blunt-hooked clasp of Read’s (2008) Class A, Type 2 and similar to ibid No. 648. The plate is sub-oval (slightly wider at the eye end) and shallowly convex on the front, concave on the reverse. There are three projecting circular attachment loops, one at the narrow end and two opposing each other at the wide end. Post-medieval copper alloy clasp of Read 2008 early post-medieval Class G, Type 1 wire quadruple sharp-hooked clasp constructed from three lengths of wire of two gauges, the narrower one tightly wound around the other two, very similar to ibid. nos. 572-3, both from the River Thames foreshore, London. Only two other examples, also from the River Thames, have been recorded on this database (PUBLIC-76F0EB and PUBLIC-1BBE96). Discoidal mount of copper alloy sheet with a central hole filled with remains of an iron rivet and surrounded by rust on both faces. The front face is engraved with a ring of rocker-arm around the edge and eight lines of the same radiating from the centre. The object is probably part of a Read 2008, early post-medieval double sharp-hooked clasp of Class S, of which two other examples with circular plates have been recorded in Norfolk (NMS-6DA7EF and NMS-AE34D1). However, rivets that secure the front plate to the double hook in this class are normally of copper alloy. For a shield-shap…

Hook-piece from a copper-alloy blunt-hooked fastener of post-medieval date. It has an oval plate with relief decoration of a stylised face set within an oval made up of two swags of drapery. There are possible flowers or plant stems curling to either side. This is all set in a double ridged frame, with a broad groove between the ridges. The design is the right way up when the object is held with the hook to the right; the hook bends slightly backwards and then forwards, and is then broken (slightly worn break); it is 6mm wide at the break. There is a circular loop for attach…

Copper alloy arm-fragment from a Victorian skirt lifter. It comprises a circular-sectioned rod, now bent into a U-shape with a flattened oval terminal at one end, terminating in an old break across a circular perforation. Projecting from the opposite end is a shallow U-sectioned oval bowl. Just above the scoop is a wide transverse groove. Post-medieval white-metal coated copper alloy dress fastener of abnormal form, bearing some similarity to Read 2008 early post-medieval single blunt-hooked clasps of Class A, but without close parallel in both its sub-trapezoidal shape and its decoration, and with a blunt T-shaped hook that might be considered a toggle. Relief decoration comprises a scroll at each corner, with two at the end near the hook curled around attachment holes. Between these there is a large heart-shaped aperture and a motif that covers the rest of the surface appears to be a passant guardant leopard standing…
