Description:
An incomplete silver-gilt dress fastener of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 – 1600. Read’s Class B, Type 3.
The main plate of the dress fitting is triangular with a twisted wire filigree border within which are three wire filigree circles. These would originally have housed raised bosses. Six large granules are present, set in the spaces between the circles and border.
To the reverse of the plate a circular sectioned piece of wire is present representing approximately half of the attachment sewing holes and the eye loop. Only …

An incomplete copper-alloy blunt-hooked dress fastener of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1700. Reads Class A, Type 2.
The main plate is sub-ovate with two complete ovate attachment knops projecting from either side of the outer edges. The remains of a third attachment knop can be seen to the more pointed end of the plate though is lost to worn breaks. The wider end of the plate displays worn projections which would have formed an integral eye.
The upper surface of the plate is decorated with a spray of three flowers bordered by ring and dot motifs.

The dress-hook eye is of Read's Early post-medieval Class A, Type 8 being oval in plan with three attachment knops, two bifurcate ornamental knops and a rectangular attachment loop. The end attachment knop is collared. The upper surface is decorated with an oval panel of moulded-relief decoration bearing possible foliate and floriate within a beaded border. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

A complete copper-alloy dress hook of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 - 1650. The dress hook is of Reads Class A, Type 1 being circular in plan with three attachment knops. The main plate has moulded relief and openwork decoration. The decoration comprises seven pellets forming a stylised six-petalled flower at the centre, set within two concentric linear circles with alternating pellets and transverse bands.

A complete cast cooper alloy hooked tag of post-medieval date. The hooked tag is of Reads Class A, Type 2 being oval in plan with three attachment knops and a rectangular attachment loop. The upper surface is decorated with an incised foliate design with in a border of annulets and the reverse is flat and undecorated.
The metal has a mid greenish-brown patina and is worn. The hooked tag is 37.3mm long, 30.2mm wide, 1.7mm thick and weighs 5.5g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy hooked tag of post-medieval date. The hooked tag is of Reads Class A, Type 8 being oval in plan. The tag is extremely worn and has lost its attachment knops and collar. There are faint traces of a raised floral design within an oval border on the front face of the tag though it is now very worn. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
The metal is a dark reddish-brown colour and is worn. The hooked tag is 25.5mm long, 16.2mm wide, 2.1mm thick and weighs 2.3g.
A similar example is illustrated in Read, p.175, no.663.

An almost complete cast copper alloy strap fitting or dress fastener. The object consists of an oval plate with attached loops. There are loops on both sides of the now broken projection hook and one at the opposite end of the plate. The plate itself has been decoratively stamped and features a floral design. The surface is mid greenish-brown in colour. The reverse is undecorated. This fitting probably dates to the 17th - 18th century.

A fragment of a solid silver-gilt dress fitting or mount, medieval in date, most likely dating to the 15th Century. It is formed from two plates of silver; the surviving pieces are tongue shaped. The top one is slightly smaller than the bottom one; the two have been soldered together. The terminals are both broken, one has an irregular break, while the other has been torn. The edges of the bottom plate have been decorated with an applied cable work design. The top plate is decorated with a chevron design, with further cross-hatched incised marks. The reverse is smooth and undecorated.

The male section of a two part toggle fastener.
A cast copper alloy, hollow backed toggle fastener with two rivet holes for the attaching of rivets, one of these rivets remains in place. The thin double collared circular male terminal is rounded and slightly offset to interlock with the open female fitting at the opposite side. This is only one piece of a pair of such fittings, the other is missing.

Possible silver moulded dress fastener dating from the 18th century. The object comprises a leaf-shaped, moulded body with loops for attachment and a hook. There is one loop at the apex and one to either side of the hook. The body of the fastener is decorated with a line of pellets at the centre with radiating lines on either side.

A cast copper alloy clothes fastener dating to the 17th century AD. The plate is oval in shape and is decorated with a punched ring and floral motif within a punched ring border. At one end is a small circular attachment loop, with a rounded knop, similar knopped loops can be seen on either side. These eyes would have allowed the fitting to be sewn onto a garment. At the opposite end there is a rectangular loop, through which a ribbon wpuld have been passed. The reverse is undecorated. The object is worn with a mid reddish-brown patina.
