A complete gilt cast silver dress fastener (eye) of post-medieval date (c.1550-1600).
Description: The body of the piece is sub-triangular with one sewing loop each side towards the bottom. A larger loop is formed at the top, in the centre, emerging from an integrally cast horizontal bar that extends further than the width of the body. This loop is where the hook would have been inserted, thus forming the eye part of the hook and eye clasp. The centre of the piece is decorated with a recessed cinquefoil with raised edges within a raised circular border. Smaller circles flank this one at each side, just below the bar, from which two small knops extend, one on each side to meet to the centre circular border. Beneath the centre piece, is an irregular trefoil shape. This all sits within a further border that runs along the edge of the body, curving inward to pass around the smaller loops, then outwards where the body widens, before terminating at the bar. The back is flat and undecorated, although a possible maker's mark is perhaps distinguishable. There are extensive traces of gilding on the front.
Measurements: length: 15mm; width: 13.5mm; thickness: 1.75mm; weight:1.3g
Discussion: Other eye pieces of similar shape and style are reported through the Treasure process and recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database include, SOM-616C6A (2014T505) DOR-9D6C65 (2011 T373), BERK-749F61 (2012 432) and ESS-F12A68 (2010 T255). These all feature cherub heads in the centre however, although of different designs and have a combined date range of 1550-1700. NMS-5BF876 (2018T231) is an example with a similar foliate design and has a date of 1550-1600. A date of 1550-1600 is therefore suggested for the example recorded here.
Conclusion: It is therefore clear that this object likely dates to before 1721 and as the object is made of more than 10% precious metals, it constitutes potential Treasure under the stipulations of The Treasure Act 1996.

A complete cast silver dress fastener (eye) (Read's Class A, Type 2) of post-medieval date (c.1600-1700).
Description: The object consists of an oval hollow dome bearing a ridged trilobate collar at the juncture of the plate and eye flanked by attachment loops. A second trilobate collar decorates the opposite end from which a larger attachment loop extends with an additional decorative knop. The eye is oval and so would have taken a blunt-hooked fastener.
Measurements: length: 24.6mm; width: 16.2mm; thickness: 3.3mm; weight: 1.61g
Discussion: Read (2008) classifies this type of dress fastener as 'blunt-hooked' and an exact parallel of this example can be seen at no. 648. It seems likely that most blunt-hooked fasteners should be dated to the 17th century; an example is known from a 17th-century context in Lincoln (Egan in Mann 2008, 10-11; fig. 6, no. 11), and another from a 1680s dump at Mark Browns Wharf, London (Hinton (ed.) 1988, 146, 403; fig. 184, no. 189). White metal coated copper-alloy parallels for this object can be seen on the database at NMS-1C2644; NMS-A40B20 and YORYM-B0D14B all dated 1600-1700. A date of c.6100-1700 is therefore suggested for the example recorded here.

A worn near complete copper alloy dress hook eye of the early Post Medieval period, circa AD 1600 - AD 1700.
Description: The hook has sub-oval plate with a rectangular looped eye at one end. There are two perforated knops flanking the eye for attachment and a third at the other end of the main plate. The terminal attachment knop has a decorative scrolls at its base. There are decorative scroll knops either side of the middle of the plate.
The main plate has cast relief decoration consisting of three borders, the outer one formed from the edge of the plate, the inner is feathered with some extenuation via engraving and the inner border is solid. Within the borders is a floral device flanked by large pellets perhaps intended to be leaves. The reverse is undecorated with some minor finishing. Some slight bevelling may have occurred around the outside but it is obscured by ware. It has a grey green patination with some surface pitting
Measurements: 39.5mm long, 23.25mm wide and 7g in weight.
Discussion: Comparative examples have been published by Read (2008, 175) nos. 663, 664 and 668. These are classified as Early Post- Medieval Class A, single blunt hooked and eye clasp, Type 8, defined by three attachment knops and dated 17th century. Similar examples are also recorded on the PAS database @:WMID-1C4FA7, NMS-E30B8E, BERK-E61789 and NMS-F3E51F.

Description: Class A, type 2 dress hook. This hook is white metal coated, which has largely worn away. The main section has a floral design which is bordered by a ring and dot pattern, the dots also appear on the leaves and stem of the flower. The hook has been damaged, likely in antiquity, resulting in the projecting attachment-knops being missing, as well as the eye section. The back is flat and undecorated; the hook is a pale green/silver colour with some light brown patches visible.
Dimensions: Length 27.69mm, width 18.70mm, thickness 1.63mm and weight 3.34g.
Discussion: Read illustrates a few similar examples (2008: 170-171), numbers 639-644.

A cast silver gilt 'looped' portion of a dress fastener, dating c.1500-1650.
Description: The item is sub-triangular in shape and is formed from a chubby head with wings or vegetativeelements sprouting from the crown of the head. Above the head between the sprouting elements is a large open loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. From the lower sides of head are two smaller attachment loops, through which thread would pass to sew the fastener into a garment. These are formed from acanthus or other vegetative loops sprouting from the side of the head and looping downwards and joining at the mouth. In between these two smaller loops is a small knop.
The item appears to have been cast in moulded relief, and the detailing of the eyes nose and mouth and cheek are all clearly defined. The surface is gilded though much of this has worn off. The back of the fastener is flat, plain and undecorated.
Measurements: 10.34mm wide, 13.04mm long, 2.82mm thick and 1g in weight.
Discussion: There have been many examples of similar dress fasteners of this kind previously recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Most, however are more obviously cherubs, this example maybe intended to be a cherub looking out of foliage or a green man type figure. Most of them are silver gilt and have been declared Treasure. An incomplete Post Medieval silver-gilt dress hook. This example is a fragment of a Read, Class A, Type 2 example; consisting of the lower dome of a trefoil shaped fastening. The dress hook is broken at the upper portion of the dome, where it was formerly connected to a further two domes. The circumference of the plate is decorated with a scalloped edge. The dome is decorated with twisted wire filigree forming three circles, the interior of the lower two circles contain a further three circles, with an annulet where they meet at the centre of the circle. At the centre of the design, there appears to be a missing annulet. The upper circle has no interior decorated further supporting that this is a fragment of a larger object. At the lower portion of the dome, there is a smaller circle which contains an annulet; this borders the cylindrical hook which projects from the reverse of the plate.
The reverse of the hook is undecorated; however there is a 'V'-shaped stamp on the upper portion of the hook. The hook projects downwards from the down and then curves back towards the reverse of the dome, finishing with a pointed terminal. The hook has been flattened slightly and the hook twists to the left.
The object measures 15.2 mm in length, 10.3 mm wide, 6.0 mm thick (at dome apex) and weighs 1.99 g.
