A cast silver gilt 'looped' portion of a dress fastener, dating c.1500-1650.
The item is sub-triangular in shape and is formed from a chubby head with wings or vegetativeelements sprouting from the crown of the head. Above the head between the sprouting elements is a large open loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. This item seems to be an incomplete Post Medieval silver dressing fitting, made in one plane. The object is sub-triangular in plan, with three larger holes, which almost look like mount fittings, also aligned in the shape of a triangle, but oriented in the opposite way. Each corner of the initial sub-triangular orientation is comprised of three smaller holes surrounding a small raised pellet. A Post Medieval silver-gilt dress hook with trefoil-shaped back plate with cusped edge. The back-plate supports three hemispherical bosses, each with applied filigree ornament in the form of three circlets with granulated knops. In the centerr there is an aperture holds two concentric central rosettes attached by a rivet. A similar example can be seen in Gaimster, D., et al, 'Tudor Silver-Gilt Dress-Hooks', The Antiquaries Journal, 2002, Vol. 82, pp. 157-196, fig. 5, p. 163. A Post Medieval silver gilt dress fastener of 16th to 17th century date. A hook piece with filigree decorated plate. The plate is trefoil shaped with a dome on each foil; the domes are surrounded by applied filigree wire circles and all are glided. At the centre between the domes is a single domed pellet of gilded silver. There are three further pellets, one between each dome. The back of the plate is flat and bears file marks. At the back is a backward curved, pointed hook soldered to the plate. Above this is a separate bar to allow the fastener to be sewn to fabric.

Discovery: Recovered on 4th December 2012 from palaeo-environmental sample . This sample had been retrieved by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2008 during a controlled archaeological excavation at Captain's Cabin, Wincheap, Canterbury (site code CCW EX 08). Silver-gilt hook section of a blunt-hooked dress clasp; Read's (2008, 159-60) Class B, Type 2. The dress clasp has a circular plate which is convex in profile. The front is decorated in filigree with a ring of seven annulets surrounding a central annulet with a large pellet in the centre. There are six smaller pellets around the outer edge of the plate with the indication that a seventh pellet has been lost. All of the decoration is set within a peripheral filigree border. An incomplete Post Medieval silver-gilt dress hook. This example is a fragment of a Read, Class A, Type 2 example; consisting of the lower dome of a trefoil shaped fastening. An early Post-Medieval (c. AD 1500-1600) silver gilt dress hook of Read's Class D, Type 1 (rectangular) (Read 2008, 59).
The body and hook survive, but the attachment loop is missing. The body is rectangular with seven projecting knops on the corners, sides and attachment end, and a fleur-like moulding at the junction with the hook. At the centre of the body, three worn annulets surmounted by a recessed heart.
A very similar example can be seen on the database: KENT-442B16.
The item is 19mm long, 9mm wide and weighs 1.46 grams.

A complete cast silver dress fastener (eye) (Read's Class A, Type 2) of post-medieval date (c.1600-1700).
Description: The object consists of an oval hollow dome bearing a ridged trilobate collar at the juncture of the plate and eye flanked by attachment loops. A second trilobate collar decorates the opposite end from which a larger attachment loop extends with an additional decorative knop. The eye is oval and so would have taken a blunt-hooked fastener.

A worn and incomplete Post Medieval silver gilt dress fastener dating to c. AD 1500-1700.
This is the eye clasp of a single wire blunt hooked fastener and is comprised of a sub-circular sheet of silver on the front face of which is a raised relief openwork cinquefoil. A circular sewing loop projects from the outer edge on each side of the two lower lobes, and the larger integral eye sits at the apex, extending in a circular loop from either side of the top lobe. The back of the dress fastener is plain and undecorated with an indentation that may be a stamped mark.
