A cast silver gilt 'looped' portion of a dress fastener. The item is sub-triangular in shape and is formed of the head and wings of a cherub. Below the wings is a large open loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. Above the head are two smaller attachment loops, through which thread would pass to sew the fastener into a garment. In between the these two smaller loops is a small knop on the top of the head.
The item appears to have been cast in moulded relief, and the detailing of the eyes nose and mouth and the feathers on the wings of the cherub a…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The artefact has broken before the double protruding attachment loops above the hook. Just over half of the sub-oval plate survives with a slightly bifurcated protrusion at the widest points. It tapers to a terminal with scrolled protrusions either side of a circular protruding attachment loop. The loop has been bent upwards slightly as a result of old damage; at the broken other end one of the sides has been bent down slightly. The upper surface is moulded in low relief and be…

A worn and broken cast silver post-medieval dress fastener in the form of a scallop (cf. TAR 2004, 288; ref. 261).
A broken silver dress-hook, cast in the form of a scallop shell. At the top of the shell is a small attachment loop, with a further pair, one either side at the base (one of these is broken). The ridges of the shell are rendered by ridges emanating from the base in three bands separated by curved transverse grooves. The reverse is plain and recessed. At the base is a rectangular recess for a recurving hook (now missing).

A cast copper-alloy post-medieval probable dress fastener element (c. 18th century AD). The plate consists of a trefoilate plate on a sub-rectangular base. The central fleur itself terminates in a trefoil and is perforated in the centre. The side fleurs are also perforated through semicircular side protrusions (Dia.: c. 2.7mm). The holes are there probably to allow for sewing the object to an item of dress. The central element of the larger trefoil is raised compared to those at the sides. It expands at the perforated terminal mentioned. At its base it bifurcates into two further tref…

A complete, post medieval (cAD 1600 - 1700), cast copper alloy dress hook which would have been one of a pair of items, the other being the 'eye' . It is a Class A Type 2 or 7 (Read, Hooked-Clasps and Eyes, 2008), being flat, with an oval shaped plate with two rounded knops either side of the hook, and a third extended knop at the end furthest from the hook, all with holes for attachment to the garment or strap. The end one has a projecting collar. The face of the hook (plate) has a moulded decoration of some kind but it is not possible to discern the details. The underside is without…

The hook is blunt and formed of a flat rectangular tongue bent backwards against the plate. The two surviving attachment loops are trefoil in shape and situated roughly halfway along the length of the plate.

A slightly corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The plate is oval/ovoid with three debased trefoil attachment knops/loops. These are located along the sides and at one end. They are perforated and recessed probably for sewing the object to an item of dress (Geake 2001, 42). The upper surface of the plate is decorated with engraved and punched lines and curves, mainly forming a spray of flowers. Some of the lines are intermittent and seem to be formed by rouletting. At the base are three upturned punched crescents. Abo…
