A slightly corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The plate is oval/ovoid with three debased trefoil attachment knops/loops. These are located along the sides and at one end. They are perforated and recessed probably for sewing the object to an item of dress (Geake 2001, 42). The upper surface of the plate is decorated with engraved and punched lines and curves, mainly forming a spray of flowers. Some of the lines are intermittent and seem to be formed by rouletting. At the base are three upturned punched crescents. Abo…

A slightly corroded and damaged post-medieval cast copper-alloy dress fastener hook-piece (16-17th century AD). It has an oval plate with three loops for attachment: two at the base, protruding to each side, and one at the other end with lateral protrusions at its base giving the effect of a debased trefoil. There is a debased bifurcated knop midway along the long sides. The hook has been lost just below the attachment loops after a diagonal break. The upper surface of the panel is decorated with moulded scrolling and foliate patterns within a sub-oval border. In turn this is all encl…

A cast copper-alloy post-medieval probable dress fastener element (c. 18th century AD). The plate consists of a trefoilate plate on a sub-rectangular base. The central fleur itself terminates in a trefoil and is perforated in the centre. The side fleurs are also perforated through semicircular side protrusions (Dia.: c. 2.7mm). The holes are there probably to allow for sewing the object to an item of dress. The central element of the larger trefoil is raised compared to those at the sides. It expands at the perforated terminal mentioned. At its base it bifurcates into two further tref…

A slightly corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The plate is oval/ovoid originally with five angular attachment knops. These are located in pairs along the sides; that at the terminal has been lost. They are perforated and recessed probably for sewing the object to an item of dress (Geake 2001, 42). Two are just above an angular collar that separates the plate from the recurving hook; this latter has been broken. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with engraved and punched lines and curves, mainly forming a s…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The artefact has broken before the double protruding attachment loops above the hook. Just over half of the sub-oval plate survives with a slightly bifurcated protrusion at the widest points. It tapers to a terminal with scrolled protrusions either side of a circular protruding attachment loop. The loop has been bent upwards slightly as a result of old damage; at the broken other end one of the sides has been bent down slightly. The upper surface is moulded in low relief and be…

A worn and broken cast silver post-medieval dress fastener in the form of a scallop (cf. TAR 2004, 288; ref. 261). A broken silver dress-hook, cast in the form of a scallop shell. At the top of the shell is a small attachment loop, with a further pair, one either side at the base (one of these is broken). The ridges of the shell are rendered by ridges emanating from the base in three bands separated by curved transverse grooves. The reverse is plain and recessed. At the base is a rectangular recess for a recurving hook (now missing). The decorative treatment of this dress-ho…

A corroded, but complete cast copper-alloy Post-Medieval toggle. It has a circular cross-section but is pointed oval shape in plan. Cast integrally there is a flat-sectioned arm coming from its side which terminates in two small circular loops (set together like a figure of eight). The metal is red-brown in colour with overlying mid/dark green corrosion product. Such objects have been found all over the country and recorded on this database: see, for example, SF-6E4BF6. Generally, the arm has been found to be perpendicular to the main element.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval dress fastener (17th century AD). The majority of the artefact survives, including the main, shallowly convex, oval plate. At one narrow end a wide hook emerges (W.: 5.9mm), curving upwards slightly before a break. At the other end there is a small projecting circular loop. There are two further circular loops on each side of the oval, just above the hook. The small holes may have been used for sewing the object to an item of dress (Geake 2001, 42). Incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy dress hook. The body of the hook is circular, with a raised circular ridge. There is a small circular rivet hole at the centre of the recessed circular area, presumably to attach further decoration to this area. The body has a decorative border of small moulded semi-circles, which are worn around the edge, however two small worn breaks are slightly visible where an integrally cast loop has broken off. The now missing loop would have been used to sew the hook onto a garment. The moulded decoration expands into a sub-rectangular openwork design …

A Post-Medieval copper alloy dress fastener catch-piece (16-17th century).
