Description:  An incomplete silver-gilt dress fastener of early Post-Medieval date (c. AD1500-1600) - a Read Class B, Type 3 triangular wire single blunt-hooked and eye clasp.  The dress fastener consists of two pieces: a triangular shaped front sheet and a twisted wire eye which would originally have been attached to the rear of the triangular sheet.  The sheet is decorated with a double border of filigree wire.  Pellets are present on two of the triangular points of the inner border (a third pellet would presumably have been present on the now broken off corner …

Description:  A complete Read Class B Type 2 post-medieval silver-gilt eye-plate dress fastener dating to c. A complete silver Post Medieval hooked dress fastener. It is circular in shape with twisted silver wire filigree decoration on the outer face. This consists of a double wire border with four circles arranged in a quatrefoil in the middle. To the reverse is the remains of the hook which has broken off. It appears to have been cast in one piece, in moulded relief.The item is sub-triangular in shape and is of a trifoliate openwork design. Below the sprouting elements is a large open loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. Silver gilt post-medieval clothes fastener (eye clasp). The item is circular and partially damaged. There are two integral attachment loops and there would have been a third, though this is now missing. The larger of the two loops may have acted as the eyelet portion of the fastener, rather than as an attachment loop per se.
